Base iPhone 17 is not an incremental update but a generational leap over all previous base iPhones. For 300 more you'd get a much better spec phone which will last you much longer in terms of future proofing the device

Too expensive. $399 would be better deal

This is just normal price. Not a deal. In a couple of months, metro or cricket, total, straight talk, boost and the like will be selling the 15 for $99 or $149 max.

The regular iPhone 15 doesn't support Apple Intelligence features, even though it can run the latest iOS updates that introduce Apple Intelligence on other devices. Per Apple, Apple Intelligence requires certain hardware (like more RAM and advanced processing) that the regular iPhone 15 doesn't include. That may or may not matter to you.
Kids don't care about this. They just don't want to be a part of the dreaded Green Message gang.

WTH, I'm not sure this is a good deal, $500 for a two-year-old phone with only 128GB. My friend just bought a brand-new iPhone 17 (256GB) for $785 in other country. Where is our money?

$99 would be an even better deal.

$0 would be an even better deal.
He meant that iOS26 crippled anything less than iPhone 16/17. I do experience daily glitches now on 13Pro. I think they simply run out of memory for the OS. On the other hand, I would not buy the latest best flagship for a kid - it is higher risk to get the phone broken, lost or stolen. Yep, I would say $400 for iPhone 15 would be an OK kind of deal, $500 is stretching it...

Doesn't mean it shouldn't though. They're grossly overpriced. I'll give credit to Apple for finally modernizing the base iPhone with the 17's 120Hz screen and 256GB storage though.

I saw Apple Intelligence mentioned as a reason to upgrade to iPhone 17.
But Apple Intelligence is totally a failure. Tim Cook just fired their AI head.

This is a perfectly decent deal in the grand scheme of things. I'd rather not give any of these tech companies my money at the moment, but unfortunately these devices are an integral part of modern life and if you need to upgrade this is a fine option. You can absolutely get by with 128gb local storage, but it always comes down to your personal situation. The idea that the average person absolutely cannot live without 256gb of storage and bleeding edge AI integration is crazy to me. Again, it all comes down to use case, but the average cell phone user does need either of those things to function on a daily basis.

Swappa has this same phone and configuration starting at $400 and that's used, in fair condition. $475-500 is not a bad price for an unlocked, new or open box iphone 15 with no unlock period or hoops to jump through. Cheaper carrier deals will come around, but they're a dime a dozen. I'm certainly not personally endorsing these prices, I'm just dealing with reality not pie in the sky pricing.

Daily reminder, Walmart has iPhones 14 Pro/Pro Max, iPhone 15/15 Plus, 15 Pro/Pro Max any memory capacity for $300/each when you add a line/upgrade on AT&T/Verizon/T-Mobile, provided you can find any leftovers in stores. As the iPhone 15 is the most common leftover, you have a pretty good chance there

Best Buy has unlocked iPhone13 for $200+ which I think is a better deal for a teenager. Or, transfer/add a line to ATT and get a iPhone 16 for $7.99/monthly for two years, which is a better deal than paying straight for it.
