This Costco First Alert rechargeable 5 pound extinguisher stands out as a solid home safety buy, especially because it includes a heavy duty mounting bracket and is often priced below its regular $39.99. The unit is described as quality, and the full weight should be about 10.2 pounds when properly charged. Maintenance is straightforward, with the gauge kept in the green and the powder occasionally loosened by inverting and tapping the canister. The main caution is to check the charge on arrival, since past Costco units have arrived low and needed returns.

Common Questions (5)

  • Weigh it after delivery and compare it to the listed full weight of about 10.2 lb. The gauge should also sit in the green; if the needle is low, the propellant may be low even if the extinguishing agent is still present.

  • Yes, it can be inspected and recharged, but the service cost can exceed the price of buying a new one. A reported commercial service and recertification visit cost about $100, making replacement the cheaper option in many cases.

  • Yes, it is a 5 lb extinguisher. The regular non-sale price is reported as $39.99, with sale pricing dropping to $30.

  • Yes. It comes with a heavy-duty mounting bracket, which adds value at the $30 price and makes wall storage easier.

  • For commercial use, it should be inspected annually, recharged every six years, and hydrotested every 12 years. At home, keep the gauge in the green and occasionally invert and tap the canister to prevent powder from caking.

It was $30 in two different Costcos, in different states.

Cost our business $100 for a fire extinguisher company to come out and "service" and recertify it.
Cheaper to just buy a new one.

You can get them inspected and recharged if needed but the cost will be higher than just replacing it.

Good deal! This is the time of year I think about smoke/CO detectors - and the fire extinguisher totally slipped my mind.

We purchased several of these a few years ago from Costco and had to take half of them back because they weren't fully charged. If you have something worth saving, buy good ones!

In commercial use, inspected annually, recharged every six years and hydrotested every 12 years. At home, make sure the guage needle is always in the green, turn the extinguisher upside down occasionally and tap the bottom to make sure the powder isn't caked on the bottom.
