In commercial use, inspected annually, recharged every six years and hydrotested every 12 years. At home, make sure the guage needle is always in the green, turn the extinguisher upside down occasionally and tap the bottom to make sure the powder isn't caked on the bottom.

I just did some research on this and the way to tell is to weigh it after you get it. For this one the manufacturer lists 5 lb of agent and a total full weight of 10.2 lb, then when you put your extinguisher on a scale, a properly charged unit should read right around 10.2 lb.

Community Reviews

This Costco First Alert rechargeable 5 pound extinguisher stands out as a solid home safety buy, especially because it includes a heavy duty mounting bracket and is often priced below its regular $39.99. The unit is described as quality, and the full weight should be about 10.2 pounds when properly charged. Maintenance is straightforward, with the gauge kept in the green and the powder occasionally loosened by inverting and tapping the canister. The main caution is to check the charge on arrival, since past Costco units have arrived low and needed returns.

We purchased several of these a few years ago from Costco and had to take half of them back because they weren't fully charged. If you have something worth saving, buy good ones!

The gages were low due to the propellant being low not lack of the extinguishing agent.

Apart from recharging them, would it be possible to just recycle them?
If so, which companies/orgs take them in for recycling please? Thanks..

Cost our business $100 for a fire extinguisher company to come out and "service" and recertify it.
Cheaper to just buy a new one.
I just drove mine to a local guy that has a refill business last time. Alternatively I have a friend that owns a business that has to get theirs rechecked/filled every so often. He has let me include mine with his batch for a couple bucks. 5lb would be the minimum size I would buy for anything. For reference I believe the last 5lb extinguisher I bought was $70+.

Cheaper yes but without the state fire marshal tag from the fx company. The AHJ might not accept the tagless extinguisher for permitted businesses.

You can get them inspected and recharged if needed but the cost will be higher than just replacing it.
Yeah you are right! Thanks for the info!

Once the extinguisher is fully discharged the metal can be recycled, probably at a metal recycling center.
Some local fire departments will come out to teach fire extinguisher use classes using your extinguisher.
