In commercial use, inspected annually, recharged every six years and hydrotested every 12 years. At home, make sure the guage needle is always in the green, turn the extinguisher upside down occasionally and tap the bottom to make sure the powder isn't caked on the bottom.

I just did some research on this and the way to tell is to weigh it after you get it. For this one the manufacturer lists 5 lb of agent and a total full weight of 10.2 lb, then when you put your extinguisher on a scale, a properly charged unit should read right around 10.2 lb.

The gages were low due to the propellant being low not lack of the extinguishing agent.

He has let me include mine with his batch for a couple bucks. 5lb would be the minimum size I would buy for anything. For reference I believe the last 5lb extinguisher I bought was $70+.

Cheaper yes but without the state fire marshal tag from the fx company. The AHJ might not accept the tagless extinguisher for permitted businesses.

Once the extinguisher is fully discharged the metal can be recycled, probably at a metal recycling center.
Some local fire departments will come out to teach fire extinguisher use classes using your extinguisher.
