I think it's $10 to upgrade to Switch 2 edition. I also heard you can borrow the cartridge from a friend or library and pay the Switch 2 upgrade and not need the cartridge anymore to play.

Don't think that's how the cartridge works. Still required

For most games, yes. But not for this game.
You can absolutely borrow the Switch 1 cartridge, purchase the Switch 2 upgrade through the menu, and download the Switch 2 digital version directly to your Switch 2. No cartridge required when playing the Switch 2 version.

That's exactly how it works for this game. You play through the intro and then on the main menu there is an option for a discount on the S2 version. This actually adds a DLC to your account that is the discount and the S2 version will only be $10 for you. At any point you can give the cart back (or return a borrowed virtual card), it's not needed for the discount or the Switch 2 game. This only works for Hogwarts Legacy since they have this unique setup for the discount.

From what I've read, this game is an exception because of how they set up the Switch 2 version. Haven't tried it myself, but I've seen people post here that it works (don't need the cartridge after getting the upgraded version). You need to play to a certain point in the game (relatively early) before you can get the upgrade.
It's all very strange, and maybe a deliberate way to price discriminate (on a title they've literally given away on PC, and nearly give away on consoles).

Didn't do the borrowing thing so can't comment on that.

CAN comment on the game - beat on PS5, Xbox One, and Switch to try all versions.

Game is totally there, totally playable, but significantly downgraded for Switch, both in terms of graphics and for the added loads between zones. Still amazing that they got it to work at all, and still totally enjoyable.

On Switch 2 "update", it looks fantastic and doesn't have the long loads. Like a version halfway between Xbox One and PS5.

Also, if you just play the Switch version on Switch 2 (without the upgrade purchase), load times are significantly shorter.

That is great to hear because the loading time entering and leaving the buildings in the village about turned me off the whole game
