Not a bad deal at all for the functionality and quality, but the newer eufy S4 camera is what these should have been all along (though the wireless solar version of that is $300 / camera currently).

I have 2 of these - pretty good camera quality, even in low light, and the 3x zoom is nice to actually pickup detail of objects further away.

The one I have facing south with ideal placement (no shade throughout the day) always remains at 100% charge even with significant # events detected. The other which faces west and under some shade (not ideal) needs to be charged about every month or so to top up. Not terrible, but annoying since I have it mounted up high by the street and you have to remove the whole camera to charge.

Which brings us to the downsides that the new S4 fixes. First - this only detects where the camera is facing, it has no out of view detection. The S4 now has a wide view fixed camera that basically gives you 180 degrees of detection. This is helpful for situations where there are multiple targets you might want to capture or track. This also allows for potentially even greater field of coverage (such as on the corner of a house / nearly 270 degrees) if you position the fixed camera facing one way and the pan / tilt camera facing the other in their default positions. Secondly - the battery is within the camera, which doesn't bode well for replacement down the line, as well as needing to take the entire camera down while it's charging. The S4 has a separate battery bay you can hot swap for near continuous coverage, with much easer accessibility and replace ability down the line when the battery is old.

Lastly - The 3x zoom (while good) is still borderline on the ability to capture finer details like a license plate number from a distance (my camera is about 10ft high and 20ft from the driveway entrance). The S4 has 8x zoom which is ideal, even from very far away. It also seems to do a much better job auto framing subjects when it's zoomed in (sometimes the 3x captures only the bottom half of a car and the 1x captures the top half on this camera).

As a bonus (while not a big issue for me since I use homebase with larger storage) the S4 has a microSD card for larger / cheap on device storage. My existing placement for one of my cameras is on the edge of the range of my WiFi. It usually works and connects fine, but sometimes during bad weather it can have limited or slow connection drops. Having larger in device storage ensures those events still get saved and captured (especially if you have it plugged in and enable 24/7 recording - which the S4 also supports and these don't, even if plugged in to power).
Thank you so much, I didn't know about this new camera. I was about to order another S3 since I already have one, but this new S4, even though it's expensive, really has everything we want in a camera.

I have couple ring cams and thinking to change to avoid subscription. Are these a recommended switch?

Thank you for such a detailed review of the S4. I got the S3 from Costo back in December and its a poor mans S4. For now it meets most of my needs and I could not justifiy the price point of the S4, but trust me I wanted to my wallet just would not agree with me. The S4's microSD functionality is the one thing that I really wanted...sigh maybe next year. Its truly sad when you hope something will break so you can buy the next shinner toy.

What's the difference with this and S340? Look the same.

What do you think the black panel is for? LMAO
I find the solar can't keep up with demand, during the winter season.
I ended up running a USB-C cable through the window jam to keep it charged, for some.
In fact, many of my Eufy solar cam's have trouble with solar charging, despite proper solar panel positioning..
I'm on a dead end street, so it's not like they get a lot of activity.

I had wondered the same and checked into it.
I guess the S3, is the retail version, vs. Amazon and direct.

Buy a larger 3rd party solar panel and put your mind to rest. Search amazon for "external solar panel for eufy cameras", they run $15-20 and typically include a 6-10' cable you can run and place for better solar capture.
