Since this thread will probably get a lot of views let this be my yearly reminder that when it comes to the desktop/download version, virtually no one needs anything other than Turbotax Deluxe.

TT strongly pushes Premier and Home & Business but the fact is that TT Deluxe can handle every situation that these more expensive versions can. The only exception that I am aware of is the ability to create W2 and 1099 forms for employees in H&B.

Deluxe has everything for all investment types, everything for owners of rental properties, everything for self-employed (1099-NEC/Schedule C filers), everything for those who do itemized deductions.

The higher versions offer more guidance but Deluxe has all the forms required and will still walk you through all of it.

Note that Turbotax Online is completely different, Deluxe Online is purposely limited forcing more complex returns to use the more expenisve Online versions than Deluxe.

Friendly reminder that this now requires Windows 11 and unfortunately will not work on Windows 10.

Or just do freetaxusa and get the same experience on the web for free. I think state is like $15 if you want to do that through them too

This is way better if you didn't use TT last year https://slickdeals.net/f/18986884

I, reluctantly, still use TurboTax because it imports directly from my brokerages and makes some of the more complex data entry easier.

I use the Deluxe version. Even though it doesn't "offer guidance" into some of these items, it still imports and generates the proper forms. Hopefully by next year, I'll be able to switch over to something else like FreeTaxUSA.

TurboTax Premier includes additional step‑by‑step guidance specifically for investments, rental properties, and Schedule K‑1 forms. Deluxe can handle some of the same forms, but it doesn't walk you through the more complex areas or provide the detailed interview prompts that Premier offers.

If you have rental properties or you receive K‑1s, Premier is designed to guide you through depreciation, basis tracking, passive activity rules, and the various supplemental statements that often come with those forms. Deluxe may let you enter the data manually, but it won't give you the same level of explanation or error‑checking, and it may prompt you to upgrade once you start entering more advanced items.

In short, Deluxe works for simpler returns, but Premier gives you the extra help and structure that makes investment and rental reporting easier and less error‑prone. If your return includes rentals or K‑1s, Premier is usually the smoother experience.
Deluxe works fine for rental properties. It does ask about passive activity and provide basic guidance and the question/answer format for depreciation, expenses, etc. I've noticed no difference between premier and deluxe for rental properties in my situation.

All depends on how much hand holding folks need, with some situations more complicated than others. The underlying forms are the same.

TurboTax Deluxe does not support importing Schedule K‑1 forms. Deluxe may allow limited manual entry in some situations, but full K‑1 support including guided entry and import requires TurboTax Premier or higher.
If it's in .TXF format you can import in Deluxe. I received a paper form from a Limited Partnership a few years ago and I manually keyed it in.

Edit: TurboTax Desktop products include all the same forms.

Sounds quite good, but do they have free Federal E-file and $20 or so for State E-file??

Good to know. I have purchased Premier and it doesnt provide that q/A about depreciatioin, expenses etc. It gives a list that you enter. If Deluxe does the same, then I wont need to buy Premier.

TurboTax has free Federal e-file and State is $25 or it was last year. I used the $10 credit for the State e-file.

I feel sure it would be fine for simplier taxes but without an import from brokerage firms it's a no-go for me and many others. Unfortunately, at this point I'm locked into TurboTax or a CPA.

If you're a straight W-2 person, freetaxusa is probably a good choice. No need to overpay for something you don't need.
