Since this thread will probably get a lot of views let this be my yearly reminder that when it comes to the desktop/download version, virtually no one needs anything other than Turbotax Deluxe.

TT strongly pushes Premier and Home & Business but the fact is that TT Deluxe can handle every situation that these more expensive versions can. The only exception that I am aware of is the ability to create W2 and 1099 forms for employees in H&B.

Deluxe has everything for all investment types, everything for owners of rental properties, everything for self-employed (1099-NEC/Schedule C filers), everything for those who do itemized deductions.

The higher versions offer more guidance but Deluxe has all the forms required and will still walk you through all of it.

Note that Turbotax Online is completely different, Deluxe Online is purposely limited forcing more complex returns to use the more expenisve Online versions than Deluxe.

Friendly reminder that this now requires Windows 11 and unfortunately will not work on Windows 10.

Or just do freetaxusa and get the same experience on the web for free. I think state is like $15 if you want to do that through them too

Absolutely! Make sure your brokerage firm is in the import list. The only issues I've experienced with TT is with municipal bonds and a K-1 partnership.
@missellie care to expand on the issues you've experienced? I switched to TT from H&R for last years taxes and felt more comfortable with the TT outcome for my K-1 partnership. The true driver for my switch was H&R not supporting efile in 2023 following IRS form 7206 being added.

How old is your computer? Any machine made after 2018 should be Windows 11 compatible and the upgrade is free.
Definitely not an upgrade. Win 10>win 11

been checking for this daily... now for all the goobers that use free, no name tax software to post, because everyone's taxes are really, really simple.. and we have a complete turbotax thread
I have complex taxes and use FreeTaxUSA is sufficient. What does TurboTax offer that justifies the premium?

Much clearer and better guidance in my experience. If you don't need that like I do, get the cheapest option possible.

I too am not a fan of TT but I relent and I wait for this Costco sale every year. I have a ton of K-1s (including non-resident K-1s from other states) so I've gotten accustom to the way TT does it (which is still not ideal). Not to hijack this post but all these other services being mentioned... how do they fare with K-1s?

I more meant if FreeTaxUSA as a company is bought by another entity (they gotta make money somehow). That other entity would now have your data. So its make a deal with the devil and buy Turbotax or take that potential risk. Don't know which is better.
If FreeTaxUSA is bought out, the new company still has to get your permission to sell your data according to IRS rules. That's the theory anyway. Keep in mind that H&R Block, Tax Slayer, and Tax Act were caught sharing data with Meta without permission, so there's no guarantee regardless of who you go with. Desktop software with local data is *probably* the safest option, but even that goes through vendor servers before going onto the IRS when you e-file.

I feel sure it would be fine for simplier taxes but without an import from brokerage firms it's a no-go for me and many others. Unfortunately, at this point I'm locked into TurboTax or a CPA.

If you're a straight W-2 person, freetaxusa is probably a good choice. No need to overpay for something you don't need.
Import of brokerage 1099-B via PDF is now supported with FreeTaxUSA! Also other 1099 and W2 forms.

Haven't tried it yet.

This is my annual comment to remind people that if they purchase the digital download of tax software, Amazon will apply any no rush shipping credits that you have on your account as they consider software an eligible digital purchase.

For those of us not buying apps, ebooks or renting videos this can add up to a nice little discount.

It doesn't appear to be a direct import from a brokerage firm. It needs to be a .pdf from your computer. I guess that would be possible but just an extra step since I have multiple types of 1099s from multiple accounts generated into one document from my brokerage firm.

Thanks for the info.

About the cost of 1 fast food combo deal. Not quite what it was a few years back

The H&R block deal seems a bit better at deluxe + state for $25.

For most people TT and H&R Block will be identical. If you have some special circumstances like running a business, being self employed, large investments, etc then one it the other might net you a little more or little less of a refund.

I've used H&R Block for the last 6 years and have run into little bugs or glitches every year (importing, EV tax credit error, etc) so bear that in mind, but they were all eventually fixed with software updates. I had to wait 4 extra weeks to file last year until they updated their software to process the EV credit properly.

Just inconvenient, but worth the $20 savings imo since I wasn't in a rush.
well you dont have to worry about that EV credit any more now LOL.

Why would you wait if you have Costco membership? I will just buy it now and do a price adjustment on 19th when the deal goes alive.
