Since this thread will probably get a lot of views let this be my yearly reminder that when it comes to the desktop/download version, virtually no one needs anything other than Turbotax Deluxe.

TT strongly pushes Premier and Home & Business but the fact is that TT Deluxe can handle every situation that these more expensive versions can. The only exception that I am aware of is the ability to create W2 and 1099 forms for employees in H&B.

Deluxe has everything for all investment types, everything for owners of rental properties, everything for self-employed (1099-NEC/Schedule C filers), everything for those who do itemized deductions.

The higher versions offer more guidance but Deluxe has all the forms required and will still walk you through all of it.

Note that Turbotax Online is completely different, Deluxe Online is purposely limited forcing more complex returns to use the more expenisve Online versions than Deluxe.

Friendly reminder that this now requires Windows 11 and unfortunately will not work on Windows 10.

Or just do freetaxusa and get the same experience on the web for free. I think state is like $15 if you want to do that through them too

Why is this sooo true. I have saved Hundreds on other things, but I cannot miss my $10 off tt yearly deal. I tell my wife this too, and she just stares at me. I am happy to know someone gets me.
She's not staring. She is silently judging. Trust me I know.

How us friendly is h&r? Does it update to any new tax laws? Ppl say, its a little buggy, can you confirm? Does it off 1 free state file?
I've used it for 5+ years and it's worked fine for me. Never tried TT. They update pretty regularly and Deluxe come wit 1 free state but E-file costs $25 for the state. Federal is free.

I have seen this mentioned elsewhere. What is the extra guidance that Premier has? I have been using Premier for a long time because I thought I needed it for rental properties. It would be nice if I can just get the cheaper Deluxe but what guidance would I be missing out?

This may not be completely true, especially if you need to file separate returns for LLC. I saw a similar comment last year and bought the deluxe version but found out that it was lacking. Have you prepared a business return with the deluxe version for a pass through entity?

It was my understanding that TurboTax Deluxe does not support Schedule K-1 import. Is that correct? Thanks.

Their privacy policy says they won't sell your information to third parties. The IRS also says it's illegal to do so without express permission.
I more meant if FreeTaxUSA as a company is bought by another entity (they gotta make money somehow). That other entity would now have your data. So its make a deal with the devil and buy Turbotax or take that potential risk. Don't know which is better.

Not worth it. FreetaxUSA for the win. Much less BS and way cheaper than turbo tax.

Ever wonder how this can be "free" and how they pay for the resources you're using to file your taxes?
They charge for certain features, like state tax returns and upgraded services.

What about this? https://taxneeds.com/product/turb...gK2EPD_BwE
I noticed this one advertised at the top of this page also. All I can think of is that since it is only good for 1 filing/computer, it isn't as appealing?

TurboTax Deluxe does not support importing Schedule K‑1 forms. Deluxe may allow limited manual entry in some situations, but full K‑1 support including guided entry and import requires TurboTax Premier or higher.

TurboTax Premier includes additional step‑by‑step guidance specifically for investments, rental properties, and Schedule K‑1 forms. Deluxe can handle some of the same forms, but it doesn't walk you through the more complex areas or provide the detailed interview prompts that Premier offers.

If you have rental properties or you receive K‑1s, Premier is designed to guide you through depreciation, basis tracking, passive activity rules, and the various supplemental statements that often come with those forms. Deluxe may let you enter the data manually, but it won't give you the same level of explanation or error‑checking, and it may prompt you to upgrade once you start entering more advanced items.

In short, Deluxe works for simpler returns, but Premier gives you the extra help and structure that makes investment and rental reporting easier and less error‑prone. If your return includes rentals or K‑1s, Premier is usually the smoother experience.
