TurboTax Deluxe desktop is the main value pick here for people who want guided tax prep with brokerage imports, stock sales, and even many rental or self employment returns without paying for Premier. The desktop version is praised for handling multiple federal returns, keeping data local, and offering clearer interview style guidance than online. The biggest catch is Windows 11 support, since Windows 10 is no longer compatible. State e file still costs extra, and some complex K 1 or business cases may still need more hand holding.

Just want to double check, can Deluxe also handle ESPPs and RSUs?
I got Premium last year thinking it would provide something advantageous for calculating cost basis for RSU sales (after initial vesting, which is in your W2), but it still required me to manually adjust. So going back to Deluxe this year.

I'm thinking about switching too.
I tried to save a bit by trying H&R and it was much more archaic and not worth it to me... admittedly, that was at least 5 years ago - so hopefully it has improved since then.

I use https://www.freetaxusa.com/ over this junk - it's free for many, WAY cheaper for the rest, and far more intuitive even for complex scenarios.
Don't pay Intuit, who just spends your money lobbying to make it hard to file your taxes so you keep paying them.

There are now 8 companies on the IRS's free tax file list. FreeTaxUsa is one of them. However, they're all income means tested.

Depends. The Amazon deal will get you 5% if you use a Prime card, and a $10 Amazon gift card. The Costco deal will get you some percentage back (maybe 4% if you use a 2% credit card and are an Executive member) and $10 credit you can use towards things like state e-file fees. If you are are going to pay Turbotax/Intuit at least $10 more anyway, the deals are pretty similar. If you aren't (because you will print and mail your state returns or you don't have any state returns), then the Amazon deal is clearly better.
Thanks! I forgot Turbotax charges extra to submit your returns electronically. That's an absolute racket...

TT allows you to file up to five federal returns so it will work for returns for you and your kid. However, the federal and state version only includes a return for a single state. If your kid has to file in multiple states then you're going to have to pay to download software for any additional states.
Thanks!

Boy, it was a shock to see this only works on Windows 11 - my dad bought it before checking. Just spent far too many hours patching the install files so it works on Windows 10.

Good to know for the future.

Though I'm running TurboTax on Windows 11, I'm thinking of going back to Windows 10 (and eventually Linux or MacOS) because Windows 11 is becoming ever more intrusive by forcing updates and (opt-out?) AI agents on the user. I will need to check which other applications will stop working.

Tell me you like wasting hundreds of dollars without telling me you waste hundreds of dollars. bounce
ChatGPT confirms this 100%. Key point is the last line.

When you would want an accountant
You generally only need one if you have:
Rental property
A side business / 1099 income
Significant investments, stock options, RSUs, or complex capital gains
Multiple states with complicated residency issues
Trusts, estates, or large tax planning needs

If you're just working a job and getting paid a salary → software is optimal.
I guess 'AI Said it' is the new 'Read it online' reference. You can repeat this all day and I'm sure some accountants are crap...but not all of em. I've done 1:1 comparisons that prove you wrong by going thru self-filing up to the point before you submit it.
I'll keep coming out ahead by 1000's every year. You can keep on keeping on...paying more taxes.

What exactly did the accountant find for you that was missed with self-filing? We're all dying to know.

FreeTaxUSA imports via PDF starting this year. It's too early to tell how well that works, but I'm sure it will be better with downloaded PDFs vs scanned documents. It probably won't be as good as importing directly from your brokerage.

As far as handling municipal bonds and foreign tax credits, it seems to work just about as well as TT. You can see a basic comparison here, with screenshots:

Municipal bonds: https://thefinancebuff.com/muni-b...xempt.html
Foreign Tax Credit: https://thefinancebuff.com/best-t...redit.html
State tax free US Treasuries Interest: https://thefinancebuff.com/state-...d-etf.html

If your income meets IRS Free File requirements, there are 8 choices, as you noted. But I did want to clarify that FreeTaxUSA is not just for those below a certain income. They have free federal for all, regardless of income, with a $16 fee for state filing. OLT is similar, but the state fee is only $10. Those without state tax don't have to pay those fees. And then there's Cash App Taxes, which is free federal and state for everyone, although it's not quite as comprehensive as the other two.

Thanks, we've discussed the import several times. The link for Foreign Tax Credit was interesting. TurboTax was the clear winner. I will stick with it until I go back to a CPA. My financial advisors are shocked I still do my own taxes!

It's amazing to me that the various products don't actually generate the same result given the same input data, even though they should in theory. I think they all take the easy way out far too often and tell the user to figure it out from the IRS instructions. An example is home mortgage interest if you refinance, have a 2nd home, or are over the mortgage principal limit - all of them basically tell you to figure it out yourself or just flat out do it wrong in some cases.
