Defeat the safety mechanism for quicker pours and even use of a siphon. Just pry/pull the white cone thingy out. Game changer.

Most of you who are having problems with the nozzle either (a) don't know how to use it properly or (b) are trying to use it to fill tanks it was not intended. These are meant for stationary or stabilized equipment. I have a couple of these and keep one for my small equipment because it never leaks. It will not work with one person on hand held equipment (like a line trimmer) because the gas tanks are not secured, but works just fine of the equipment is held steady in a vise or on the ground by a second person. It will not work (well) with passenger autos because they not meant to be filled from a portable nozzle that doesn't comply with SAE J285. Y'all may as well be complaining that UK power outlets are impossible to use because your US or EU* plugs won't fit.

I'll also say that, while metal cans may survive longer, I've had a half dozen of the Midwest cans for over a dozen years with zero deterioration or problem, and I have two older polymer cans that date to the 1970s (+/- 5 years) I got from my grandfather which are still in great shape.

If you're going to use these to fill large tanks or cars/trucks, do yourself a favor and get a shake siphon. It's many times easier than even the traditional fill spouts on cans, and doesn't require an air return/relief valve.

(*fun fact: EU plugs *will* fit into UK outlets, but UK outlets have a safety cover which is released by inserting a ground pin. Release the shield by inserting a dummy ground pin manually and you can leave your UK adapter at home)

I'm shocked, all-out shocked, folks could say this can is the worst. Yes, there's a button to dispense, but it's 10x easier than any other safety system for gas cans I've ever encountered. Some are downright stupid. This one is gravy.

Genuinely. I have four of these and cannot not spill everywhere.
I bought one and the safety mechanism activates before the nozzle is all the way into the tank at least on the vehicle I tried it on. I've never dumped gas all over the ground ever except for this "safe" container. Requiring an different container to fill different equipment isn't safe either because now I have twice as many flammable containers to deal with in my attached garage.

I assume you can get the simple old-school yellow nozzles / spout for it?

Seriously, I find his design to be light years better than the old style ones.

Nothing about the product description calls out not being able to use it on passenger vehicles, in fact it says it's suitable for RVs.

As someone who parses legal code all day long, something not being called out as being incompatible doesn't mean it's compatible. Not that you're wrong to expect a gas can to work in something that requires gas. Having read into the background of these, they really are intended to be used with fill holes which are larger and have a lip which can actuate the mechanism for closure and vapor path, though.

These do not have a hole for pressure relief. Mine swelled like a balloon in my shed last summer and split at the seam, spilling 4 gallons of gas all over my wood shed floor...

dang, all the Northern Tool locations around me closed down last year. $10 shipping kills the deal.

Also, why are all the reviews on the site for a chair?

Nozzle is horrible. Thank California for ruining it.
Is this one of those cases where a company ruins their product because of a California law rather than choosing to (1) make a crap version for California and the normal one for everyone else or (2) stop selling to California? If it is, then they are partly to blame.

Harbor Freight and Walmart have had 5 gallon Midwest plastic gas cans on sale as low as $13. They seem to work OK because the metal ones are so expensive. Are the plastic ones going to rot or degrade after a while? I gave up trying to use the nozzles. I got a flexible funnel with a large opening and just pour into it.

These style nozzles are fine for smaller size cans, but the 5 gallon is too flimsy to not leak with that much weight, even while I'm supporting most of the weight as it slowly fills my lawn mower over 2 minutes. I personally hate the design on these and love my fast-filling tuff jug cans that I bought to replace these leaky nozzles. Someone linked a very similar product available at tractor supply that look identical to the tuff jug ones.

Make sure you contact them for extra O rings ahead of time. Mine wore out and I contacted them, they sent them but didn't communicate that so I returned the jug before it arrived.
