This sensor is weatherized quite well so I assume it will do better outside in the elements if that's were you install it. For indoor use this is probably overkill. These can work with a normal Zigbee hub without the Hue hub, that's how I use the two of these I own.

Do they alert you when motion activated? That seems like the only reason anyone would want something like this to be 'smart', no?

I'm not sure about the alerts, but a lot of people use motion sensors in order to trigger automations for their other smart devices.

For instance, I know somebody who has a long hallway and the motion sensor triggers the Philips Hue lights in that hallway to turn on for 30 seconds. There's no reason to ever leave the hallway light on, and flipping a switch on and off each time is a nuisance. That's a very first world nuisance, and it's definitely a luxury to have the automatic lights, but that's an example of why you would want this to tie into your smart home system.

They do whatever your automation tells the system to do when they detection motion. It could be an alert, turning on lights, play an audible message, etc. Whatever you want to happen when motion occurs you can program.
