Duracell AAA and AA batteries here are mainly attractive as a free after rewards stock up, especially for buyers who can also use the purchase toward ink recycling or other Office Depot rewards redemptions. The deal can effectively turn a small out of pocket spend into store credit, and the rewards behave more like a gift card than a coupon. The big caution is leakage, with repeated reports of batteries leaking in unopened packs, in storage, and inside devices well before expiration. That makes them a better fit for low risk use or quick turnover than for anything valuable or long term.
people planning to stack Office Depot rewards with ink-recycling qualifying spend because commenters say the 100% rewards can be used for ink recycling/qualifying spend and they've earned back more rewards on a battery purchase.
office and home battery users who go through lots of AAA/AA and are willing to accept the risk because commenters say they still buy these on 100% rewards since they use lots of batteries anyway.
shoppers who want a "free after rewards" battery run and don't want to pay for a Costco membership because commenters argue this deal is free after rewards and better than paying membership for a comparable pack price.
anyone storing AAA/AA batteries for long periods in devices or leaving them in electronics, because multiple commenters report Duracell AAA/AA batteries leak badly if left in devices for a long time and can cause a mess in the battery compartment.
people who can't risk electrolyte damage to valuable electronics (like remotes, flashlights, calculators, toys, or camera equipment), because commenters warn these batteries can leak even when stored unopened and can ruin devices.
buyers who want to avoid the hassle of warranty/service steps, because commenters report Duracell may require sending in unopened battery packs (with a shipping label) or dealing with a service center process.
people who want to keep batteries in long-term storage without surprises, because commenters say leaks can happen years before the labeled expiration date (including from unopened packs).
They can leak in unopened packs and in devices, sometimes years before the expiration date. The reported failures are often at the bottom of the cell and have damaged electronics, toys, and remote controls.
The purchase earns 100% back in Office Depot rewards, which post as store credit-like rewards that can be used later. One pack can also qualify for ink recycling rewards if you meet the $10 minimum spend, making the effective return higher.
Duracell can replace leaking batteries, but the process may require photos, a service-center claim, or mailing the batteries in. Some replacements are handled with a coupon for any Duracell product, while others result in a check for the purchase price.
Costco's 40-pack for $19.99 is cheaper per battery, but this Office Depot offer is free after rewards and can be more useful if you want store credit back. Costco also requires a membership, while the Office Depot deal can be stacked with rewards and ink recycling.
OD rewards have an expiration whereas Staples don't.
All ODs closed near me. The last time I purchased OD batteries (the last promotion) they already leaked. Glad they closed all the stores near by and curbed my urge to PM and buy batteries from them.
OD's rewards are good for 90+ days, ie, earn them today, good to 4/30.
Plus any $10 OOP purchase gets you another $20 in rewards for recycling 10 ink carts. So on one pack of $18 batteries you can earn $38 back in rewards (100% plus the $20 in ten ink carts)
Now, granted, while they do expire, unlike Staples Rewards these are not treated as a 'coupon' on orders, they act like a gift card. So....I often do my P&G rebate items at OD since P&G doesn't ding for gift card use. Spend my $50 in rewards, price matching to other stores for best values, get a $15 Visa Card.
Also, you CAN redeem for postage stamps, something you can't do at Staples. They each have their benefits IMO.

Costco offers a 40-pack of either AAA or AA batteries from the same brand for $19.99.
Oh you costco people just don't quit!! THIS IS FREE AFTER REWARDS! You get your money back to spend on other items. Do you get your $19.99 at costco? NO YOU DO NOT.
Please, stop with the Costco is nirvana posts. It's a crap deal IMO compared to getting 16 or 24 batts for FREE AFTER REWARDS. Not to mention. the majority of citizens DO NOT BELONG and are you going to pay $65 for a membership to get your battery deal??
I've experienced this deal multiple times, and the batteries leak very badly if left in devices for a long time. I noticed they are made in China, as indicated by the Chinese characters on them, compared to Duracell made in the USA.
From what I understand, Duracell batteries are alkaline, so they shouldn't leak like other acid batteries.

Duracell ABSOLUTELY DO leak. Just like Energizer. I've had them leak, stored in their unopened factory packs, in a climate controlled office, years before they were labeled to expire. I still buy them on these 100% rewards deals because we use lots of batteries, and we spend the money at the store anyway. Just don't put them into anything you don't want damaged by electrolyte leaks. Especially don't put them in remote controls that sit for long periods unused. In my experience, they can leak while still powering the remote. By the time they go all the way dead, you might have a big mess inside the battery compartment.
To be fair, the Duracell company has been good about replacing leaking batteries for us in the past. It's a pain to deal with, and you must send them in to a service center. But they have made good on their warranty.
I'm not a chemist, but it seems that they could easily fix this issue if they wanted to. I've seen plenty of other brand batteries that haven't leaked all over. No doubt there was a cost benefit analysis done on consumer sentiment about leaks, vs price, vs chemistry/performance. If they were not free after rewards, I wouldn't own these leak prone brands to save my life. Hope someday to see their CEOs called out by more consumer protection advocates. Throwing away a brand new unopened package of batteries is one thing. Having to replace perfectly good flashlights, calculators, toys, camera equipment, etc., is just unacceptable.
Hey, Thanks for posting this deal. By the way since it's 100% back and I am gonna use it to buy like coffee/supplies is it worth applying coupons? Or just pay out of pocket for more rewards?
I bought like empty ink cartridges onlines and I recycle them monthly at OD and get $20 in Rewards too so free batteries is so clutch. Thanks again
Also, for leaking duracells, you can email them and they send you certificate to buy new batteries. Before they used to clean/replace devices also, like suppose your Xbox controller went bad cause of leaky batteries you can mail it to them and them will clean it/if they can't repair/clean it they used to give you money to replace it. (I don't know their current policy)

I have NEVER had to send them in. I contact them, they ask for pics, I send them, they mail me a coupon that is good on any Duracell.
I've done 3-4 warranty replacements this way in the last 5 years or so.
EDIT: Ah, you probably meant to repair/replace the damaged item. I have only done the "Hey, the pack of batteries I have are leaking and I never opened them", which happens a lot.

I PM to Amazon to lower the OOP cost and tax paid.

You're not wrong, but you seem really wound up. Have you tried decaf?

I actually was asked to send in the unopened battery packs. They sent me a shipping label and I had to wait a few weeks for a check in the mail to cover the purchase price.

No, they always leak.
I have a hack to avoid damage from leak. First, cut up a piece of aluminum foil little bigger than the bottom. place on the bottom and wrap it up. Then wrap a tape around it to seal/secure it. Aluminum foil conducts the electricity and if it leaks, leak is contained inside the aluminum foil only. This has worked for me so far.

The 100% Office Depot rewards offer can be stacked with ink recycling qualifying spend for additional rewards.
The rewards are described as acting like a gift card for redemption timing, which can help with planning purchases.
The deal can be redeemed for postage stamps, which is not available through Staples rewards per the comments.
Duracell warranty replacement support reportedly includes contacting Duracell with photos and receiving a coupon for future Duracell purchases.
Duracell AAA and AA batteries can leak and potentially damage electronics even when stored unopened.
Leakage can occur years before the labeled expiration date when batteries are stored at room temperature.
Battery leaks can damage items such as remote controls and toys, especially when batteries sit unused for long periods.
Duracell warranty replacement processes can require sending in unopened packs and waiting weeks for a check.

At least when staples does a similar offer, it seems they carry more worthwhile items to burn the reward points on
