- you can use on longer trips where you need to bring multiple batteries (I always bring an extra battery for my headlamp on backpacking trips)
- you can add a charged battery to this, so you know it will work, rather than finding it dead
- can use the batteries for other things if not using this (it doesn't have to keep an unused battery sequestered)
- if the battery dies, you can still use the device by just getting a new commodity battery
