Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank big mike

Pros:
Shortest midrange zoom Nikon makes
Not much cheaper used
Light
Sharp
Cons:
Slow aperture
Narrow range
All plastic
Twist to open/use (more common now, makes the lens store smaller but you have to get it open to minimum focal length before using)
Not particularly good out of focus (bokeh) quality, and not much isolation due to slow maximum aperture, ok for "vacation photography" of things, but a lot of people want to shoot people with a lens in this focal lens and it won't make great portraits due to inability to isolate subject from background.
Not enough cheaper than a 24-70 f4 used imho
If size is your main concern, this may be a valid choice, otherwise I'd go for the 24-70 f4 or the 40 f2 prime as a compromise.

Agree, the only real benefit of this lens over the 24-70 is the small size. I already have the 16-50 DX lens which is super compact.

One other note, Nikon dropped the 24-105 f4-7.1 last night apparently, presumably it will be the new low end kit lens, so these may see more downward price pressure soon.
