Since Straight Talk is a prepaid service, yes you can just stop paying after 60 days.

As far as if they unlock is automatic, I'm still in my first 60 days and on an Android device, so I can't say if they unlock will be automatic on an iPhone or not and I don't want to give you incorrect information. I've spent a lot of time in Straight Talk threads the last few months and generally what I've heard is that Android phones unlock automatically on or around the 60 day mark. I have seen iPhone users mention they had to contact Straight Talk for an unlock, but I'm not sure if those were isolated cases. Perhaps someone with iPhone/Straight Talk experience could speak on that specific issue?

Once unlocked, the phone should work on any carrier (in the US, at least). HTH!

Sure I bought one of those as well for ~$155 after taxes. Plus bought the Samsung galaxy a9+ tablet for additional $20 post activation of the line and sold it for ~$100 to make the deal sweeter.

This however might work for someone who would want to use the phone elsewhere after 60 days instead of waiting for 365 days past activation.

Straight Talk unlocks phones after 60 days of active service. This service does not have to be continuous.

If you're on the silver plan or higher, you can add a second line and get $15 off service on the second line (so silver would only be $30).
i bought the same phone in thanks giving time - https://slickdeals.net/f/18806347-straight-talk-apple-iphone-16e-5g-128gb-with-in-store-activation-early-black-friday-199?sort=oldest&page=37&src=SDSearchv3&attrsrc=Thread%3AExpired%3ATrue%7CSearch%3AType%3Anormal%7CSearch%3ASort%3Arelevance%7CSearch%3AHideExpired%3Afalse&p=181709863&comment=success#post181709863
Paid $305 total
had a chat with Straight Talk agent to unlock iphone and below he what said-
I have checked our system's requirements. Our devices are programmed to automatically unlock 60 days after activation. Once that period has passed, the 'SIM Restricted' message will disappear, allowing you to add any international eSIM of your choice.

I let my first month expire on a previous deal then added another month after 2-3 weeks of no service. Once that 2month of service expired on me the iphone was automatically unlocked

This deal is not a cheapest from ST Online as it was $249 + 2 months of service to be unlocked before.
At $299, if you really need this phone then it is alright.

Update:
Looks like Walmart is also selling this phone for the same price of $299:

Worth trying to buy via Walmart and use the $25 unlimited plan to activate. YMMV

I've tried the $25 top up on a previous deal and it does not work. Have to go with the $35 plan.

If they don't unlock automatically google "straight talk unlock policy." There's an unlock request form right on that page. If it qualifies they'll unlock it.

Can this be rebranded to tracfone for a cheaper 2 month plan?
Yes. Chat on Tracfone website. If you get a rep that seems to not want to do it or doesn't know how then just say you changed your mind and close the chat and try a little bit later. I just did this with 2 ST iPhone 13 from Walmart. Expz
