Sure I bought one of those as well for ~$155 after taxes. Plus bought the Samsung galaxy a9+ tablet for additional $20 post activation of the line and sold it for ~$100 to make the deal sweeter. This however might work for someone who would want to use the phone elsewhere after 60 days instead of waiting for 365 days past activation.
Interesting I was offered a deal like that for a tablet but it was if I paid for $60 total three months worth of $20 a month LTE tablet coverage I could get the TCL next paper. I guess it even has SIM support. But it only had 4 GB of RAM and it was $60 total. So I ended up passing. I think they might have offered the a9 as an option too.

The deal I am referring to in this comment is for Metro by T-Mobile for a Samsung Galaxy A9+ 5G tablet and not Straight Talk or Total (deal for TCL NextPaper 5G tablet with 3 months of plan purchased) - if that's what you are referring to. Also, the TCL NextPaper 5G from ST/Total is 128GB/6GB 5G LTE unlocked tablet vs the one from metro 'Samsung Galaxy A9+ 5G' is 64GB/4GB variant locked to Metro for 365 days after activation.

Paid $305 total
had a chat with Straight Talk agent to unlock iphone and below he what said-
I have checked our system's requirements. Our devices are programmed to automatically unlock 60 days after activation. Once that period has passed, the 'SIM Restricted' message will disappear, allowing you to add any international eSIM of your choice.
Paid
$199+taxes+ 2 months $45 plan ( 10 cash back from amex) = $305 total including 2 months service

Update:
Looks like Walmart is also selling this phone for the same price of $299:

Worth trying to buy via Walmart and use the $25 unlimited plan to activate. YMMV

Can u explain that 25$ top up card? I thought I read you have to be with them for 12 months before you can use that 25$ card to keep your service going. I want to switch from t mobile post past to straight talk

I am not sure I follow what you mean. Please go through the discussion in this thread for details. I have already mentioned that $25 unlimited plan did not work for me, but worked for some ... Hence YMMV.

Also all devices activated on Verizon network are eligible for unlock after 60 days of paid service post activation. The actual unlock policy is also discussed in this same thread, kindly check.

received my order yesterday and activated.
However, the plan shows 28 days left instead of 29 or 30.

I dont know if it is gonna effect my unlock.
Just some information.

All of us have same issue but their record have activation date couple of days earlier. You can find it from Manage Lines -> Transactions.

The iPhone 17E will be introduced in February or March. There will probably be additional price drops on the 16e soon.

I have a question on activating a ST phone purchased through Walmart. Can I go to ST website and activate, the same way I would activate a phone from ST or do I need to buy $35 card from WM? I did a deal with iphone SE 3 a few years ago but I forgot exactly what I did. I remember I got a text only or text/call (no data) for the 2nd month at that time. I suppose it is different now and there is a report that $25 phone card does not work to unlock. Thanks

It's the same as if you bought it from ST website, you're just getting it from a retailer instead. Activate whatever way works best for you.
($25 plan is for unlocked BYOP, not locked ST models).
