Fire tablets were all right when they came out, but the processor was about 5 years old at release. Now the CPU architecture is about 10 years old and it's really showing. And for some reason Amazon is not showing any interest in modernizing the lineup.

If you want a B&W Kindle then they are pretty good so long as you educate yourself on the limitations and the vendor lock-in.

The Kindle Fires, though, best to pass on them for now unless you're buying one for a kid.

yep, they can run about one app at a time. multi tasking is bad and slow. but for cheap if you have a single use in mind, its ok.
i do have a fire 10 from a couple years ago. Its usually just serving as my WYZE camera monitor since I wfh and want to see cams when im at my desk.
if we travel i will download some stuff from netflix or something and can watch videos.
but you arent going to flip between slay the spire and relay for reddit or something, its just gonna choke.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank avalon

bought the 2021 around black friday for $32

took a risk, got the SLATE 64GB grade C

turned out virtually NEW I do not see a scratch anywhere

note you cannot root or bootloader unlock any Fire after 2019

however there are workarounds now like Shizuku and the "system user" hack

FireToolbox really worked well on the 2021

NOTE THE 2021 SLATE is the PLUS MODEL

the plus model has wireless charging and 3GB of memory instead of 2GB

the appear to only have the "black" model of the 2021 right now which is NOT the plus

Are these the kind that can use Fully Kiosk to become a wall calendar kind of thing?

What do you mean by "vendor lock-in". I was hoping to use it to check out ebooks from my local library. Is this not possible?

I came here to comment the same thing about getting the Fire 10 for kids. I've gotten them for my kids off of this Woot deal in the past and they are happy with them. Definitely fast enough for them and can play their simple games, learning apps and streaming services. I don't bother with any of the amazon kid monitoring stuff, I just pay attention and limit screen time. Can't go wrong for the price.

Depending on what platform the library uses, you might be able to use it for library books.

Man I remember getting an older Paperwhite for $20 on Woot, kind of a bummer that they don't get close to that price any more.

Still a decent deal if you caught the cheaper ones before they went oos.

You should be perfectly fine for library use. The lock in only comes in when buying books. Amazon wants you to only buy books from them and not let you take them anywhere else.

While this is true, if you have DRM free ebooks, they work great on any model Kindle, especially if you convert them using Calibre ebook program.
