They must have been sitting on the shelf since 2006 since they have a 20-year shelf life. Either that or they weren't lithium batteries.

Yes, but that shouldn't be a problem for people that take advantage of this kind of offer. They know (and Amazon knows) they're going to spend that credit sooner than later.
