I've got an older model from 2012 that's still in great shape and my regular travel backpack. I can't recommend this enough and it's always made it through as carry-on. Very tempted to get a second one just to support Osprey. One of my favorite brands.

I believe that the 55 L bag is the 40L bag with the attachable day pack, so probably worth the extra $21.

Yes, the 55L bag is a 40L bag with the 15L attachable day pack. Thanks for pointing this out.

slightly different and the 40L bag from 55L is lighter while missing a few small compartment (for water bottles) as the 40L.

I saw lots of suggestion to buy 40L + 15L, but cost more.

You say you can't decide between the 40L and 55L? Let me give you some clarity to help. The 55L Farpoint main pack is exactly the same packing size as the 40L. In order to get the additional 15L in packing space, Osprey added a 15L, detachable travel daypack that sits on top of the main pack. Yes, the 15L travel daypack is a nice feature. It gives you a detachable, 15L smaller backpack that you can use separately from the travel backpack for when you're touring around a city. Some people might like the 15L travel daypack addition, but not me. I chose to go in a different direction and use the Osprey 13L Daylite pack instead. The 13L Osprey Daylite pack incorporates/attaches well with/to my 40L Farpoint and I prefer it over the 15L travel daypack for many reasons that are too long for this review.

Looks huge. Do airlines treat this as a carry-on instead of an underseat bag?

Depending on which version this is….2024 or 2025:

Personally I recommend going with the 40L and getting a separate daypack later.

The problem is that the 55L omits the side-opening zippered laptop sleeve thats present on the 40L and encourages you to use the 15L daypack to stash your laptop.

This puts a heavy weight further from your body and can cause the daypack to droop a lot. The 40L laptop sleeve also provides better protection for the laptop IMO since it's closer to your body and it augments your center of gravity in a good way.

Personally I have been using my 40L (BF purchase 2025 @$92) with a 18L Hikelite pack that I got on here a couple years back.
The 40L Farpoint is pretty versatile and if you're crafty it can hold a variety of smaller bags (if you don't have their daypack) using its compression straps.

I can't say enough good things about Osprey. Easily one of my fav brands and I hope they keep on doing the amazing things they do. These days I just want to convert all my bags to Osprey since they are innovative as heck and just so incredibly comfortable.

These are not intended as underseat bags. If you are looking for underseat personal item bags check out Daylite 26+6.

My whole family travels with the larger Farpoint/Fairview backpacks and love them. The 40L (aka 55L minus the 15L daypack) is reportedly acceptable as a carry-on bag on most flights. The 15L daypacks are nice enough that we use them regularly even when not travelling. When carrying both, we tend to turtle them, big backpack on back and daypack in the front, for a slightly better balance and a little extra security for cash and passports, etc.

The Farpoint 55's 40L bag removes the front pouch, top pouch, and laptop sleeve from the larger 40L bag, and shaves off 7oz, but in exchange, gets a 19oz DayPack that has those missing parts. I can see how this works for air travel -- the 40L gets stowed overhead in the bins, while the water bottle, laptop, and personal care items are under the seat in the DayPack.

But... this makes the Farpoint 55's 40L bag not as useful if you're using it on its own, so if you're considering the Farpoint 55, you either want a 40L bag that is effectively a box, or are going to use in conjuction with a DayPack of some sort.

The Farpoint DayPack is 19'x11'x6', so it won't fit Personal Item dimensions for Spirit/Frontier (18"x14"x8") unless you underpack it a bit. If your carrier is not a LCC, they won't care, but do make sure to keep the two bags detached so they recognize both as size-compliant for their category.

As mentioned by others, you could get the Farpoint 40 and add a Daylite or Daylite Plus, but the DIY combo will weigh more and cost more: (using ~2022 MSRP)
* Farpoint 40 = 56oz ($185)
* Farpoint 55 = 68oz ($220)
* Farpoint 40 + Daylite (16oz) = 72oz ($185 + $60 = $245)
* Farpoint 40 + Daylite Plus (20oz) = 76oz ($185 + $75 = $260)

I went with the Farpoint 40 + Daylite Plus, because I was willing to deal with more weight and cost in exchange for the ability to use the 40L bag on its own. This worked out well, but there are two gotchas to mention.

1) The Farpoint DayPack has two strap pass-throughs on the front of the bag that allow you to attach/detach to the 40L bag using the compression straps with ease. For the Daylite, it's way more involved -- the side straps have to loop through the top, and the bottom hip belt attachment hooks on the elastic loop, and is quite difficult to attach/detach. This is both a pro and con, because the FarPoint 55's DayPack can be easily detached/stolen off your back, but stealing the Daylite will require a knife of some sort, as it's not coming off in under a minute otherwise.

Which brings us to the front/turtle carry option to prevent theft (or provide better balance)
2) The Farpoint DayPack has the ability to clip onto the front of the 40L backpack straps so you can front-carry the DayPack. For some reason, these clips do not work with the Daylite or Daylite Plus, so if you want "turtle carry" two bags using the backpack strap clips, only the Farpoint 55 + Farpoint DayPack can do that.

Anyhow, that's my 2 cents -- get whatever combo works for you!
