I don't get how this is used. Do you put the tool on the ground and ram the wood in through the top? Or vice versa with the tool in hand and wood on the ground? Either method seems an impractical and unwieldy way of splitting wood.

You put the wood on top and smack it with a mallet, they do work well I usually see them for 50-100$ so I'd be weary about how sharp the cheapo's could be

You put the wood in it and hit it with a sledgehammer. Most of these are screwed onto a stump. Then you can put the wood in the top and smash down on it and the kindling falls to the ground

Or apparently affixed to your wall with the included drywall anchors.

This thing must be tiny - the size shows a max log diameter of 6", but there's no indication of whether that's the "medium" or "large". Pass
