True but also anyone who has wanted this build has had nearly 10 years to do it.

Yeah some people are building PCs for the first time but they're the vast minority.

Overall PC gaming is still a very cheap hobby. If you look at the Steam hardware stats only about 13% have a 4070 or better.

The truth is you don't need 4k OLED paired with a 5090 and 9800x3d to enjoy gaming as a hobby.

Shit I've had the most fun in the last ten years playing indies on a handheld.

Remember the lies about covid mask shortage? This could be similar. I doiubt that no fourth company will enter market to capture the lucrative market for the next two years. At most this will last for a year. Most likely it will end sooner.
Let's hope it only lasts a year. But if you look up the AI data center up ramp around the world. I doubt they will be the case. The only thing I can see finally curtailing this expansion is energy and environmental laws.

I bought a cheap laptop to hold me over for the next year or two. But this does put a crimp in anyone looking to build a new computer. But it also impact those of us just getting started with NAS setups.

Let's not forget ram and memory is used for everything. I read articles talking about pairing back the ram on smartphones. As in going from 16 gigs on the phone to 8 or less. Laptops coming out with 8 gigs versus 16. Cutting costs here and there. On the bright side, it will make developers (Microsoft) be forced to write more efficient code than just telling users to throw more ram at it.

I wish I had bought more stuff at the beginning of the year but here we are now ....

I bought a bunch of x99 combos from Aliexpress before the tariffs. Most of them are 14-core Xeon (E5 2680 V4), mATX mobos and 32GB DDR4 that were $27-45 each at the time. Price on these fluctuated a lot and I always bought the lows. These motherboard even have TPM headers so Windows 11 is fully compatible. Gave a handful to my friends kids and nephews. Still have a lot. Those CPUs are still very capable. I paired it with a 6650XT on my test bench and games like the Finals, NBA 2K25, BF1 and more were held back by a 60hz monitor before anything else.

Would this still have been considered a deal before the ram prices went up?

Let's see how it plays out. I am expecting this demand to somehow balance out and this start cooling down relatively quickly. There was a year where servers were in demand and you could not buy them because supply was squeezed. Data centers were buying them up. Guess how long that lasted? Less than a year.

then the big companies started manufacturing their own servers because of exactly this situation. aws, meta and Google are not going to sit on their hands and be subject to supply constraints.

I have a 128GB of DDR4 from earlier in the year (upgraded from 32GB) paired with a Ryzen 9 5900x 12Core processor. Computer works great for everything I need.

I'm in a similar, slowly changing boat. I have an AM4 system which has slowly cycled out everything but the RAM.

I feel Zen 3's 12 and 16 cores will get the job done for a long time. My pipedream is a 16 core x3d chip for AM4.

If I could upgrade to that, I'd leave my system alone for another 3 years.

Microsoft has an absolutely butt ton of legacy code in their products. I'd say that ship has sailed for them, but maybe some of the smaller software companies. Smilie

Theyre slowly replacing legacy code with AI slop rust code. Only a matter of time before it doesnt matter if youre on ddr3 or ddr6, that windows will bsod daily.
