S2 steel is the best choice for Torx bits (especially if you're using an impact driver or high torque).Blunt ranking for Torx/screwdriver bits:S2 tool steel → Wins hands down. Higher hardness (HRC 58-62), better wear resistance (less likely to strip or round off), and excellent toughness for impact use. It lasts 2-4x longer than Cr-V in real tests, resists deformation under heavy torque, and handles shock without easy breakage when properly heat-treated. Premium brands use it for impact-rated bits.Chrome Vanadium (Cr-V) → Decent budget option. Good corrosion resistance and toughness, hardness around HRC 48-56. Fine for light/manual use, but wears out faster on hard fasteners or with impacts — cams out or strips easier.Chrome Molybdenum (Cr-Mo) → Slightly better than Cr-V for pure impact toughness (absorbs shocks without cracking, common in impact sockets). But for small bits like Torx inserts, it's rarer and not superior to S2 — often similar hardness to Cr-V, less wear-resistant. Cr-Mo shines in thicker tools (sockets), not fragile bits.If it's impact duty or frequent hard use, get S2. Cr-V is cheap and "good enough" for occasional stuff. Cr-Mo isn't worth hunting for bits — it's overhyped from socket marketing
However, using smthing like t25 with even 1/4 ratchet is not a good idea, I have broken one or two small torx bolts just which a little leverage from ratchet
