The ZenWiFi XT8 is a tri band mesh system that stands out for wireless backhaul, especially when nodes are separated by walls or floors. Its dedicated second 5 gigahertz band keeps mesh traffic off the client band, which should hold up better than 6 gigahertz in longer or obstructed runs. That makes it a stronger fit for wireless mesh than ET9 in tougher layouts, while wired backhaul removes most of the range concern. Merlin firmware is available for XT8 V1, and the main caution is that used units should be tested carefully.

No problem, happy to help. Sounds good. The RT-AX88U also has twice the memory (1GB) of the XT8 (512MB).
I noticed these bad comments about the XT9. Wondering if it's only the XT9 and not potentially the XT8.

your local marketplace websites like facebook and craigslist and others...
No way of knowing you if the item you are buying works fine from any Marketplace. They are cash and carry. You will probably get a dud at that price.

At a minimum you can look at the sellers reviews. I have had things that were not as described and every time I've gotten my money back from highly rated sellers. Additionally you can meet at a spot that has power to test it out (library/mcdonalds/starbucks etc..). Most reputable brand electronics if theres no visible damage and it powers on then you will be good. Also you can request a time-stamped video of the item working from the seller if it might be difficult to setup in public.

I bought mine w/o testing and they work great. Ive sold things like HDDs and computers each time ive offered a video proof of it working which most buyers are good with just that or I power it up at the meet up spot for them. I wont allow them to be crazy and sift thru every detail - there is some risk to be accepted buying used and hence the product should be discounted accordingly.

Also in most markets most electronics besides iphones and the latest greatest stuff at heavy discounts dont sell well, networking equipment is definitely one of those slow selling items. Even the device I purchases was sitting for weeks at $60.

The XT8 and XT9 are very similar. As noted by one Redditor in the Reddit thread you provided, the XT9 has a few minor upgrades, but overall the XT8 and XT9 are very close in their feature sets. I suspect people who say the XT9 is terrible would also hate the XT8. Sometimes these devices just don't work for people. Perhaps it is environmental (building materials in the home, like thick concrete walls/floors that crush wireless signal strength), the way it has been configured/set up (placing the mesh nodes wirelessly too far apart, and complaining that the system 'sucks' - when it would never work in this config, as the mesh nodes must have good signal strength to one another, to be able to reach each other/communicate), or user error. Or, it could be a genuinely bad device. Sometimes ASUS ships out broken devices that are Dead On Arrival. I've seen people post about that on Reddit too. I haven't experienced it myself, but I wouldn't call ASUS quality control perfect!

Unfortunately, you don't see the positive experiences thousands of people have, because when people have a good experience, they generally don't post about it. People are more motivated by bad experience and sharing that news, to "warn the tribe." For the evolution of homo sapiens, it's a great trait and surely helped early humans avoid danger and poisonous food that could kill off the tribe. But people seem to share less of the good news, for whatever reason.

So if you are considering the XT8 or XT9 mesh systems, buy from a place with a good return policy (like Amazon - 30 days is generally a good amount of time to test/verify something works) and try it out. If it works, great! If not, you could return it and try something else. Are you currently on the fence and unable to decide between one system or another? Good luck!

I already reported the deal "dead" to the moderators a couple of days ago. I guess they are on vacation...
