If you are just getting into crimping, look at the pass-thru crimpers and ends. Makes crimping much easier.

While I'm sure this works fine, save yourself the headache and go with a pass-through crimper. Saves a lot of time messing with trying to get the length on the strands all the same length.

When I grow up I'm going to be a CCIE and maybe even JNCIE. Then people will respect my expertise on the internet.

I've sorta looked at making my own ethernet cables again, and it seems like it's just cheaper to instead buy pre-made cables from Monoprice or a respectable seller on Amazon these days... am I missing something?

The local strip club would be a good place to start.

Klein's pass through crimper isn't very good. I finally stopped using it and bought the ideal brand one.

From all of my previous research there was a bunch of people saying Klein was the best and the people that had bad luck with those went with Platinum and vice versa. Didn't see one bad thing about the Ideal brand so it'll be the version I buy when I get around to it. Or just buy pre-made cables, that's always a safe bet if you can find them in the lengths you need.

what isn't very good about it? I've been using it for a while and it seems to work quite well

It frequently doesn't crimp down all of the pins. If you look at the amazon reviews it's a pretty common issue.

If you are doing a lot of custom lengths. If you are going to be drilling holes, the holes can be smaller and then you attach the ends after instead of drilling a larger hole to fit the ends of a finished cable. Yeah, pre-made is easier in many cases, however. As you say, cheaper also if you count the price of the tool and it's only a few cables.

I found it doesn't always cut of the last pin completely. But it's barely hanging there so I just pull it off. Every cable I've made or repaired with the Klein works great.

Before the Klein, I bought a no name cheap pass through crimper. Wasn't very good. Over half the cables I made or repaired didn't work.

When I was researching for value and reliability of making my own vs premade for PoE camera system, people said that home made cables are more susceptible to moisture over time while premade are sealed better. Premade are a lot cheaper than they used to be so it gets harder to justify. I think that this could be great for indoor or perfect-length like a homelab network cabinet or switch. For my camera system I just bought longer and left a coil next to the wall in the attic where it goes down to the nvr.

If you need many long cables or are trying to run cables in walls or tight spaces that the RJ45 connectors won't fit, then it may be better to make your own. However if you just need to run a few in a room or some straightforward install, and don't already have tools, just buy premade. You don't want to run the connectors through the wall in most cases
You will also need wire strippers, end cutters, jacket cutting tool, and cable tester. You'll need connectors and strain relief pieces. Then, things to plug them into Big Grin. If you're installing in wall, keystone connectors and a punchdown tool.

I ran Ethernet throughout my home in the walls for wired backhaul for mesh routers, Ethernet jacks in bedrooms and office, and PoE cameras around the exterior. Additional cables to connect switches, NAS, NVR, printers, desktops, laptop docks, and other devices, and a few spare cables. I used 750 ft of a 1000ft spool of CAT6 UTP. Most devices are 1 gbe or 2.5gbe. it's a lot but hoping I don't have to run more cables ever again. If somehow 10gbe becomes actually useful, the 550mhz CAT6 will support it.
