The Kasa ES20M motion sensor switch is best for hands free lighting and automation, especially in bathrooms, closets, hallways, laundry rooms, garages, and kitchens. It can trigger lights or fans on motion, then dim or shut them off on a timer, with useful schedules like lower brightness at night and full brightness in the morning. The convenience angle comes through clearly, and the price is often compared favorably with other motion or dimmer switches. The main concern is reliability, with repeated reports of lockups, fail closed behavior, and firmware problems that sometimes require a breaker reset or replacement.

Firmware and not responding is one thing but how does that bridge over to a fire hazard? Is is an actual bad connection with arcing or something? That would a problem separate from firmware.
The logic board inside gets physically hot. Other had theirs melt the plastic.

Another example of fire hazard and breaking code. If the switch fails it needs to fail open and not closed. These switches have locked up and failed in a closed state. If you have a faulty or damaged light or whatever load connected to your circuit you must be able to manually open the circuit. This could also be a human on the load side. It would be horrific if someone is touching the load side and you cannot use the switch to turn off the power. You would have to find the breaker to save the person..

I had the same issue which never got fixed. It always ended up having to manually hit the restart button! Tried updated to their latest firmware, did not fix anything. Reset the switch, nothing.I find it using the old firmware is more stable! Dont update the firmware
I had to submit a ticket. They were surprisingly fast. I read this from a Reddit post. This is a very common problem.

They had a replacement firmware right away, which shows they knew it is an issue. I have no clue why they don't push this firmware to everyone. They remotely updated my switches based on MAC. Another thing that bothers me is the firmware version. They are so lazy the reused the same minor number and the app does not tell you the build number. So in the app you do not know the real build. I thankful took a screenshot to know what build improved my switches.
v1.1.6 (Build 251212, Rel.094746).

I will not buy this brand of switches for my next house. Too many issues, they keep removing features, and staff.

I have this and my biggest complaint is that it cannot be kept on if you want to use the motion sensor. So if you want to keep the light on you have to turn off the motion sensor setting in the app. There is not even a way to use the app or any of the smart integrations to make it stay on.
Yes. I had this issue with several places in my house, were I stop moving.

Look into mmWave sensors. Everything Presence has several good ones. I am going down that rabbit hole of Home Assistant and these sensors. Once it is setup, it is exactly what I wanted. I was hoping Kasa was invested enough to do this out of the box and an all-in-one switch. These sensors are great, I use PIR to turn on and mmWave to keep the lights on.

A lot of things are not on a switch and the box in the wall and code is designed to handle a faulty device. Tons of electronics fail. I see your point but stretching

I bought 2 of their motion switches to try out and both lock up after a day or so. I have to flip the breaker to bring them back online bc they become unresponsive. Both are on the latest firmware. I'm not sure why it happens but it happens. I think it has something to do with Home Assistant but I have about 30 other non-Kasa/TPLink light switches around the house and these are the only ones that give me problems.
They have a rest button on the face, both right of the main toggle. The left button factory reset.

You can get better network traffic by having Kasa vLan. I even created a vLan just for this model. Ultimately I needed them to push a stable firmware build.

Some of my spaces I stopped using their app and sensors. I got some Everything Presence sensor and added them to HA. Shelly is looking nice right now. Lol

The 3-ways had their issues and first batch was the worst. Those are working good enough for me. The single pole, switches are fine.

I had tons of problems with this model the most, ES20M. You check Reddit and you will find others with issues.

All the 100 switches were happier when they are on their own vlan. The vendor even told me to do that. I created a vlan just for one of the ES20M and it still locked up. Make sure your WiFi is only 2.4 for them.
So, I had them running on their on SH IOT network from my pfsense router, dedicated VLAN running off of 3 eero pros. Switched to ubiquiti gateway and U7 pro AP, they couldn't stay connected for nothing. Setup was just as before, thought maybe overloaded the U7 pro in the 2.4ghz band, so got 2 more AP-Pro's off of ebay just for them and they still were dropping. Put back on the Eero and they seem mostly fine
I only have one of the motion sensor smart plug, and its still in the box haha

Bathroom fan
I wired it so the bathroom fan turns on when motion is detected in the Kitchen. Really gotta keep your smart home on its toes 🤓

So, when there is kitchen activity, you assume the bathroom will be used soon, so you turn on the fan in advance? Wow you are thinking ahead.

Why does a motion sensor switch need to be a smart switch?
I use this switch for my kitchen. It's nice that I can program it to turn on at 90% power after dark then change to 20% power about an hour before bedtime and 5% after bedtime so I don't get blinded if I'm looking for a midnight snack.

damn. its overkill for all lights. how big is your house? my house is big but i just counted all of them. total is under 30 switches. including multiple "gang up" and 3-4 way switches that these will not fit. i wonder how you use so many of these assuming all of them are single pole. 1-gang switch. my bathrooms only have 1 switch for each section. cant turn on off the fan indi
75 switches? His mansion is pretty large my guy

Echoing that these are total garbage. I had the same issue as you on two replacements where they eventually both failed in the closed (lights on) position, forcing me to have to remove bulbs until I got my replacement. I'm on my third (and last) one, and they make warranty replacement a HUGE pain in the ass.

It's interesting you mentioned the updated v1.1.6 Build 251212 as I just got a firmware update notice, and it looks like they're still pushing an older build for whatever reason. My app says the build is 250522 Rel. 210254.

I have a similar Unifi setup. I have an SSID and vLan just for Kasa and a second just for ES20M. They have the IoT check box config. Worked better but the firmware update made it more stable. The firmware issue is they do not like busy networks and the RAM storage fills up and locks up the OS. It is a memory leak and they know how to fix it. This is also common with IoT devices that have a really cheap board. I wonder if the first couple of batches of this switch were too cheap to manufacturer. Either way it was a business decision that negatively impacted their customers without QA.

How are you liking Unifi? I am liking it but spend days doing firewall rules with Adguard, HA, and things...

No issues or less issues with the other models. The real pain was this model.
