I bought 40 of these for $12 back in April. They perform decently well if the surface is flat, sometimes the hooks will strip out but it doesn't really affect the job they do. Having said that the only universe where they're holding 30lbs (regardless of orientation) is the one where you're sticking them to a much larger magnet that's stuck to a steel slab. $16 is nuts, but for $0.50 apiece I think it's still worth it. Just manage expectations, these performance ratings/weight limits are based on ideal conditions.

They have ones that claim 170 pounds! Apparently there are different magnet strengths for these. I wonder if the 40 you bought for $12 are the same strength as these.

Besides not seeming like a good value in terms of price versus cost, and the reviews showing that the product does not hold much, why are magnets a good way to install hooks?
There are a ton of options to organize things out install non-magnetic hooks.

I use magnetic mounts to mount all sorts of things to the steel door leading to my garage. Tools I use constantly are easily accessible by just opening the door and popping them off.
I certainly wouldn't want to drill holes in the door to do the same.
I also get the magnetic tool strips from HF whenever they're cheap (I miss the days they were free with any purchase) and bolt 2 back-to-back to stick them on the door and hold a lot of drivers without, again, drilling holes in the door.
