Fast forward, pretty much all games natively support 21:9, but I've seen a few implementations that actually matter if you care about competitive advantages in gaming (for single player stuff, this doesn't generally matter).
First implementation is when a game takes anything outside of what fits in a 16:9 frame, and simply stretches it to fit 21:9. Things in the center remain undistorted. This works pretty well in FPS's and remains fair because all players using 16:9 or 21:9 see the exact same content, and for 21:9 users, it fills your peripheral to still achieve a good level of immersion.
Second implementation is when the game supports 21:9 by actually showing you the extra content that actually lives outside of the 16:9 frame, which means you see more than a 16:9 user. For FPS's not really too much of an advantage, but for other genres like MOBA's or RTS which move less "twitchy" and with more time to process info, more info is always an advantage.
The third (and worst) implementation, is that some games still actually zoom and crop, which means you see the same width as a 16:9 user, but considerably less vertical content. This used to be a problem when I played WoW or Dota on my first 21:9 back in 2017. On the surface, things LOOKED fine, but the 300 or so vertical pixels you lost were actually a huge problem. WoW was downright unplayable (for me, i had friends who never noticed, not sure how they didnt) because when you lose that much vertical space on a 3rd person format, the in-game distance you have to compensate for it is considerable (ex. You have to be 10 ft away from your enemy vs 20 feet because you literally cant see them because they're getting cropped off the screen).
Nowadays, I see a lot of games doing a combination of the three implantations, namely no2. (extra content) and no3. (crop and zoom). That way things don't look distorted, and they try to mitigate any differences on what people are seeing just because they use different aspect ratios.
Depends on the game and genre.
