The Target alternative you've linked includes 4x1300mAH batteries, while OP's includes 4x2000mAH batteries (~50% longer life). Also, reading through the specifics, OP's charger is twice as fast as the Target link. Could be worth the $4 savings if you can live with small batteries and slow charging, but I don't think so

I have one of these and the charger died on me after about a year of very light use.

Do not get a charger which can only charge pairs.

In Costco's Energizer bundle batteries are made in Japan, and the charger can charge individual batteries.

Same for me. Have to charge the batteries in my very old rayovac that's still running like a champ.

Is the Energizer better in any way than this Amazon basics one?

I had the exact same, except it was the charger and 2 batteries died after about 5 months.

What incentive would any battery company have if it let people use rechargeable batteries for a long time without having to buy their overpriced battery bundles. Are there any good cheap brands that others recommend? My yale lock drains 4 batteries every 2 months.

I have used both versions of the Energizer rechargeable, the OP and the target version. Both of the chargers died. I thought it was the batteries but buying a third party battery charger on slickdeals confirmed that it was the chargers and it wasn't the batteries that crapped out on me.

Hard to go for NiMH anymore. Just recently bought some bobo lion from Amazon 4 x $5. They are shaming my Japanese NiMH cells in devices.
