"The FCC said Verizon is the only major provider that the FCC requires to unlock its mobile phones 60 days after activation, which is earlier than standard industry practice. Verizon said that it "saw a spike in fraud of approximately 55% after TracFone moved from its earlier policy of a one-year lock to Verizon's 60-day lock" as a condition of the FCC's approval of the transaction.
FCC Chair Brendan Carr said that sophisticated criminal networks have exploited the FCC's handset unlocking policies to carry out criminal acts—including drug running and human smuggling."

So FCC is hinting that Verizon no need to do the 60 day unlock policy anymore. It may mean that the currently 60-day unlock policy applied by Verizon, Total Wireless and some Tracfone may all end. Go get a Total wireless phone deal while it's still available.

So effectively when is the question??

For context, My iPhone 16e $199 StraightTalk BF Nov 2025 deal and with 60 day paid service is almost coming to an end. Hope this PSA not is not effective immediately.

This administration finds yet another way to screw the consumer.
If you think Verizon hasn't been planning this forever... I think we all knew it was just a matter of time Once they purchased TracFone

Even worse, one year of PAID service to unlock.
Are we sure it will be paid service? Nothing I've seen confirms that.

It was a rhetoric comment. I am not claiming that but just expecting the worse, going by vzn's track record. Apologies for causing confusion Smilie

Trump appointed Brendan Carr to head the FCC and he has consistently rolled back consumer protections. Verizion, AT&T & T-Mobile are loving it.

So I'm guessing it will be 1-Year now at a minimum.
I junked an old phone that they never unlocked, despite years of service, because they said I have to rejoin and pay for more months. Phone was getting old, so I ended up wasting it instead of reselling it. Bummer.

This isnt "consumer protection"
It was a loophole. MVNOs sold devices at a huge loss with the expectation they would repay with service over the long term.
Nobody is entitled to buy things at a huge loss to the seller, get real.

The loophole is closed and I will likely lose out on 2 devices waiting to unlock next month so Im pretty bummed, but it was always a risk and Im not crying about it, and least of all trying to turn it into some political nonsense. Take that garbage to Reddit.

Unfortunately the history isn't good. The last policy update when they went from 60 days from activation to 60 days paid service was done retroactively to people who had already activated but had not reached the 60 days yet. I got caught in that one and luckily it only took a $10 minimal plan to get the unlock. Obviously this one is much more substantial.

Let us know if yours unlocks.
I have 2 devices that will hit their 60 days early next month and Im not very optimistic.

He also worked for former FCC commissioner Ajit Pai, who was a Verizon lawyer. Both were against net neutrality.

Yes. No one you be surprised. You can't keep expecting companies to take a hundred $ bath every time someone buys a cheap Moto phone from Straight Talk or TW with no intent of ever using their service. I paid about $37 for the Moto G Stylus I just ordered from ST last week after CB. Even if I have to wait a year to unlock it's still a great deal.

When you abuse the system good things go away. It's just a fact of life.

No, but that's how Verizon interpreted the former 60 day unlock requirement despite no stipulations it has to be paid.

A 'loophole' they agreed to. They choose the 60 day unlock to gain access to the 700 spectrum gambling their better network would retain customers. It worked until they lost competitiveness with 5G, and now want the rules change.

They also choose to sell devices at a loss, no one forced them.

GOOD!!
As a person who actually uses Total Wireless for my cell service for the past 7 years I'm glad this is happening!
Every time I want to get a "deal" handset they are scooped up by resellers and scalpers so I have a hard time to legitimately get a new handset at a subsidized price for being a loyal customer who would keep it on their network!!

Yes, like Best Buy Gamer Club Unlocked for example for video gamers. Those were the good old days!

You've had 17 years since the 700mhz spectrum auction and 4 years since the tracphone sale to get almost-free unlocked smartphones. Be happy it lasted as long as it did, it was never going to last forever. What other business sells their goods at a massive loss for years on end?

Either way, the almost-free unlocked phone gravy train was going away. The MVNO unlocked phone deals had become so popular (SD helped!) it wasn't a rounding error in their bottom line anymore.
Either they close the loophole or they charge normal phone prices like some of the other MVNOs do now. The end result is the same.
