I really enjoyed my time with this sku Ally. Super comfortable, and almost identical in power to a Steam Deck, plus has a higher resolution/ higher refresh screen. It did help that I only paid $300 for it though (local Marketplace).

1. You're comparing against the OLED, this is the same size as the cheaper LCD
2. Not if you're comparing vs OLED and this has a 120 hz refresh rate
3. Steam has added beta Steam OS for AMD powered handhelds (like this device)
And let me add me another for you
4. There's many devices stronger than the Deck

There is no objective right choice for handhelds imo

Budget = Steam Deck LCD (Hell, ASUS was aggressive with discounts when Xbox Ally was being released that the OG Ally was hitting ~$300 and could compete with Steam Deck LCD on price)
Performance = Most handhelds beat the Steam Deck for performance, especially if you remove trash Windows and do Steam OS or Bazzite (which is where a lot of Windows devices lose FPS with poor 0.1% lows)
Battery/OLED = Steam Deck OLED (I believe OLED has better battery due to worse resolution, refresh, oled, and performance even though it has a smaller battery)
Help I have too much money = One of those $1000+ handhelds with Ryzen Z2 Extreme

I bought the SD on release and loved the thing, and I still don't have anything bad to say about it. But the Ally/Legions are far ahead of the SD. Being locked to Linux/SteamOS is a drag. Most of my stuff is in Steam, but I don't like being locked down to it only. Not to mention they're all much better performing as well.

You are asking because you already know the answer. If you want to play competitive games that require anti cheat services dont buy a steam deck would be my advice. I think that would be the only circumstance where I would recommend something like the Ally. If you need portable competitive gaming. That is a pretty small niche.

For those who haven't been following along, these Xbox branded handhelds aren't compatible with the Series S|X consoles. They are better thought of as handheld PCs with a special Microsoft/Xbox user interface and integration. And they only play games that are available on PC. If a game is a console exclusive, then you'd only be able to play it via streaming.

Exactly this. I do like my SD but I don't like being locked into the Steam OS. I know there are ways around this and some people will say it's super easy to do now, etc.. but that isn't the point. I'm computer savy but I'd rather have windows right out the box to do whatever I want with it right away. If I have a chance to trade straight for a Rog Ally X, I'd do it instantly.

So I cannot play games that I have bought for my Xbox Series X or use my Game Pass Ultimate on this device? I am tempted to get one if I can play COD and Arc Raiders.

You can most definitely use Game Pass Ultimate to play games on it.

It will play COD and Arc Raiders (though you will def have to fiddle with graphics settings).
