FYI - I bought an Eddie Bauer backpack over a decade ago specifically because they were offering a lifetime warranty. I replaced it once about 5 years after that, no problem, but then just the other day tried to replace it again after the strap began to tear off, and discovered Eddie Bauer phased out the lifetime warranty in recent years. Citing new ownership, the clerk refused to honor the lifetime warranty I bought the backpack under. Given they no longer have or honor the lifetime warranty, I see no reason to ever buy their products again. Buyer beware, I suppose.

I was told by their customer service that return, exchange and warranty are now only covered for 60 days from the purchase date. The new owner is JCPenny. Feels like the good days of product quality, reasonable prices and warranty are behind us for Eddie Bauer.

You had a pretty good run. Is this a principle thing or are you just a cheapskate?

Change of ownership? That explains why they stop giving free $15 rewards and their occasional free shipping and their great quality. JCPenney indeed.

This doesn't feel like much of a deal since clearance is ALWAYS 40%, 50%, or 60% off, so today is at most 10% less than any other day this month.
Clearance was 60% off from 12/17 until 12/29. Then, 50% started on 12/31. I think it was briefly 40% after that before going back to 50%.

The moment you see a previously well established brand repeatedly showing up in club warehouses, you know it's new owner trying to squeeze as much customer loyalty as possible for profit. This happened to eddie bauer, hurley, lands end and quite some brands.

There's nothing to "beware" of here. Businesses can't survive when people nitpick every little inconvenience and keep demanding more even after being helped once. You already received a free replacement, then broke it again, and now expect another one after decades. How long is that cycle supposed to go on?

If I didn't like a burger yesterday, should I walk into your restaurant today and demand a free one, and repeat tomorrow? It sounds absurd because it is absurd. This kind of behavior is exactly why prices keep rising for everyone and why customer service keeps declining—legitimate customers end up treated like freeloaders and thieves because of situations like this.

I've never once asked for a replacement in my life, not even for electronics under warranty that I didn't bother to check. Meanwhile, some people want free clothes and backpacks forever. That's not fairness—that's exploitation.
Not liking a burger is different than a backpack falling apart, but thank you for the comparison. My point was Eddie Bauer once had a lifetime warranty and now they don't, so my incentive to shop at their store is gone. Maybe yours remains. Good luck.

Fortunately (or unfortunately), Eddiebauer doesn't sell underwear...

They're probably fine with you not shopping there.

A "lifetime warranty" is largely a marketing promise and a way to build trust in the brand. It's meant to cover manufacturing defects or poor workmanship that prevent the product from functioning as advertised — not decades of normal wear, misuse, or abuse. No company covers that.

Realistically, no one keeps proof of purchase for decades, and few people want to pay out-of-pocket shipping just to replace an old item when newer, improved versions are widely available at good prices. In many cases, the shipping alone costs nearly as much as buying a new product.

Even electronics with one- or two-year warranties come with fine print and are often denied for breakage. That's just how warranties work.

Let companies survive and keep innovating so we can all continue to enjoy good products and good deals. Cheers!
