Touch control: You can physically press the switch paddle to turn lights on/off
Local control: The Tapo app can still control your switches via local network connection even when internet is down
Basic functionality: All standard lighting functions work normally without internet
What You'll Lose During WiFi Outage:
Voice control via Alexa/Google Assistant
Remote control when away from home
Scheduled automation and timers
Away mode security features
The switch is designed to function as a regular light switch first, with smart features as added benefits. So during outages, you'll have reliable manual control just like a traditional switch.

TP Link Tapo S500 smart Wi Fi light switches stand out as a solid way to add app, voice, and Matter based control to existing lights, especially when the box already has a neutral wire. Setup can be quick in a compatible install, and the switches keep working as regular manual switches during internet outages, with local app control still available on the home network. The main cautions are older homes, where box space, thick wiring, or missing neutral wires can complicate installation, and the dimmer version can flicker with LED bulbs. A practical pick if your wiring is ready and you want simple smart control.
people setting up Apple Home first for Matter-style workflows because you need to enable it via Apple Home before using the Tapo app (and the HomeKit-first setup steps worked for at least one buyer).
buyers replacing multiple existing switches in a room because commenters reported successfully swapping many switches (Kasa to Tapo) and getting them working well.
homeowners who already have neutral wires in the switch box because installation can be a quick ~5 minute job.
households that want smart control but still need reliable manual operation during internet outages because the switches still work as a regular light switch even when Wi‑Fi/internet is down.
people installing dimmable LED lighting because the dimmer version was reported to work well with dimmable LEDs and includes a calibrate function.
renters or homeowners who want to control lights from their phone even if the internet drops because local control via the Tapo app can still work when the internet is down but in-house Wi‑Fi is active.
older-home owners because you may not have enough box space for the switch even if it physically fits, and there can be code considerations.
people with older wiring setups that lack a common wire because a common wire is required and many older houses don't have it.
buyers who don't want to deal with wiring friction because one commenter had to use bigger wire caps than provided due to old, thick, non-malleable wires and recommended having pliers (and possibly a wire stripper).
people who specifically want Matter-certified devices because the switches were described as not "Matter" certified, which may reduce future-proofing across ecosystems.
buyers using LED bulbs that are sensitive to dimming because the dimmer version caused LED bulb flicker for at least one user.
people who prefer an up/down rocker feel because one commenter didn't like the toggle-style operation where on/off is only one-way press.
buyers who need Home app reliability because one commenter couldn't get the Home app to work and switched to using Alexa instead.
people planning multi-switch gang box installs without extra parts because the switches only include one unit faceplate and multi-switch gang boxes can get tight, requiring additional faceplates.

S505 (switch with matter, $9.50 each): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CBNX6...gToDp
Certainly, but if you have an old house like ours, be ready to fight it a little bit. I had to find a bigger wire caps than the ones provided because of old, thick wires that were not malleable anymore. Make sure you own a pair of pliers and possibly a wire stripper.
