TP Link Tapo S500 smart Wi Fi light switches stand out as a solid way to add app, voice, and Matter based control to existing lights, especially when the box already has a neutral wire. Setup can be quick in a compatible install, and the switches keep working as regular manual switches during internet outages, with local app control still available on the home network. The main cautions are older homes, where box space, thick wiring, or missing neutral wires can complicate installation, and the dimmer version can flicker with LED bulbs. A practical pick if your wiring is ready and you want simple smart control.
Common Questions (5)
Yes, it needs a common/neutral wire, so many older houses may not be compatible. Older boxes can also be tight on space, and some installs may need larger wire caps or extra room in the gang box.
The Matter version works with Siri, but Matter setup may need to be enabled through Apple Home first before using the Tapo app. A factory reset and adding it to HomeKit first can help if the Home app setup is finicky.
Yes. Manual paddle control still works, and if your home Wi‑Fi stays up, the Tapo app can still control the switch locally for on/off and dimming. Voice control, remote access, schedules, timers, and away-mode features are lost during an internet outage.
It is not directly Home Assistant-controlled out of the box; Matter support is the cleanest path for local integration. Without Matter, control may depend on cloud/server commands or reverse-engineered workarounds.
The dimmer version can cause LED bulb flicker unless the bulbs are dimmable and the switch is calibrated. The standard switch version avoids dimming issues, while the dimmer model is reported to work well with properly rated dimmable LEDs.

Have to have the app that talks to a server in a cloud data center which then sends the command to your switch, right?
Not directly home assistant controlled in your own home network. For that you need support for matter protocol in the device.
I know some have reverse engineered the commands the server in the cloud sends and have HA send it. Is that the case here?
Certainly, but if you have an old house like ours, be ready to fight it a little bit. I had to find a bigger wire caps than the ones provided because of old, thick wires that were not malleable anymore. Make sure you own a pair of pliers and possibly a wire stripper.
I got Matter version of this a couple of weeks ago and they work great with Siri.
One of the easier connection methods is to use a lever connector with anti-corrosion grease (e.g., wago 222 with alu-plus).
