It's a great deal for the restaurant and for all of us, because food cost is typically 20-25%. That's how InKind can give you 20% back in credits, plus frequent additional "rewards" discounts, and everybody still wins.
So when you dine using InKind funds, you are just drawing down on the credits that the restaurant gave to InKind. So InKind is great for restaurant cash flow, but when you dine, the restaurant collects zero cash.
That's why the credits are for food and not for tips. To the restaurant, tips are separate and unrelated to food cost. $1 in tips costs exactly $1. I think about it like I'm paying the server directly, just like it used to be when the world was cash-based. And some of those InKind credits live on to get me another stacked discount when the next "reward" appears on SlickDeals.
