They will both get the job done for the vast majority of people. I think the reason people choose this is that it's not in the cloud, supports importing directly from brokerages (FTUSA imports via PDF), and familiarity. You can also do multiple returns with this software. H&R Block will charge you extra to e-file the state, but you can print and mail it for free (or use your state's website in some cases). Some people also just refuse to trust anything that's free or unusually cheap. If you don't need or want those things, FTUSA will be cheaper. Cash App Taxes is even cheaper (free federal and state) but has a few more limitations.

The use case is traveling, when you're connecting to different WiFi networks where you don't know anything about the ISP or if they are trustworthy. When you're at home connected to your own ISP I would agree that it's not necessary.

For example I could sit in the airport and broadcast an open WiFi network called "DeltaFreeWiFi". When someone connects to it without a VPN, I can intercept their website requests and return fake pages under my control to harvest login information. I can do these unnoticeable redirections because I also control the DNS service on my network.

Does anyone know if the downloads for the tax software and the other product are separate? I don't need or want the other product, and would like to sell it online. Has anyone done this? Thanks.
There are 2 separate product keys, 1 for each product.

Each time after I renew my Nord, I go into my account settings and uncheck the auto renew. That always gives me extra time to search out discounts however they did send me a "promo" discount that was too good to pass up 3 months before my expiration date last time.
What do you use VPN for? What's the point? Does it truly mask your IP and loc?

The main point of VPN is to obfuscate your location and encrypt your traffic between your computer/network and the VPN service end point. Example where people use VPN:
  • Public WiFi hotspots
  • Accessing sites otherwise blocked by their ISP, employer, or government, or streaming service.
  • Limiting data collection by their ISP or others on the internet.
  • Business/employer requires VPN to access their backend programs/data.
  • Accessing one's home network securely.
  • Hoisting the black flag (aka piracy, torrenting).
  • Various other reasons.
Does it masque your IP and location? To an extent it does. Your VPN provider will know your location and IP address, but it reduces others from accessing or seeing it. Do a basic internet search on VPN to learn more about what it does and doesn't do.

Yes (at least for the NordVPN and H&R Block Deluxe + State) they were separate emails, one for H&R Block and another for NordVPN, with separate download individual links to separate installation programs and separate product registration codes.

It doesn't appear H&R Block Deluxe + State has gone below $24.99 at all this year on the various slickdeals posted previously. Last year the lowest price was around $22.49 for the Deluxe + State.

On a side note, noticed that TurboTax likewise is slightly more expensive this year than past years as well. (At least at the local Costco warehouse.)

I don't need VPN as I already use one from another service.

I am leaning towards Norton bundle as it has parental controls. Can I cancel their subscription as soon as I install to avoid auto renew?

Exactly the answer I was looking for. Thanks

How good is H&R Block vs FreetaxUSA?
H&R sucks compared to freetaxusa. Highly recommend using the FREE website freetaxusa...
