The handles make sense to me. When baking bread you take off the top lid about half way through to finish and brown the crust. The offset handles help to quickly get the top off while in the oven.

I had no idea that loaf-shaped Dutch ovens like this existed. It's very tempting but I'll hold off. I've had good luck baking in my "poor man's Dutch oven", which is just two regular metal loaf pans binder-clipped together.
