This H-E-B promo pairs a $100 MasterCard, Visa, or American Express gift card with a free $20 H-E-B gift card, and the main draw is the extra value on prepaid spend. The cards can be easier to find at $6.95 fee in some stores, though others still show $7.95. Redemption is the bigger catch, since these prepaid cards are hard to register for online use and often fail at tipping merchants or some checkout systems. Self-checkout also appears store specific, so cashier lanes may be smoother for multiple cards.

Yes, as long as Vanilla doesn't lock the card for trying to use it.

Were you trying to buy more than one $100 card? Go to cashier checkout. So many of us used Discover card to pay successfully. Here is from the original post:

Self-checkout will flag for manager's approval if the gift card amount exceeds $212. It is actually faster to use cashier checkout. No manager's approval is required at cashier checkout.
no, only bought one card, so total $107.95. I used discover card, and screen show something about payment method not allowed.

Sounds like a store specific policy/restriction though I am not sure if the same restriction applies to the cashier checkout at the same store. You may want to try another store.

I personally paid my purchase of 3 cards using Discover card at cashier checkout. Tried self-checkout first but got a red alert for manager's approval. An employee came over and asked me to use cashier checkout instead.

I am aware that each store can program its own self-checkout restriction. Last November when HEB offered the same deal, I went into a different HEB store that I don't usually go. I split my purchase into 2 transactions. But even in the transaction with just one $100 card at self-checkout, a red alert for manager's approval popped up. An employee told me that all non-store gift cards sold at self-checkout regardless of the amount need manager's approval at that store. She advised me to use cashier checkout.

I buy a lot of gift cards from many different HEBs and have never seen this red alert you speak about.

When they don't understand what's happening, they tell you to go to a regular lane. The sign they usually have up near self-checkout clearly says you can do gift cards there.

for sure, self-checkout CAN do gift cards. But, my specific situation is, I cannot pay with discover credit card. I paid using debit card, and it went thru.
probably a store specific thing.
