Not an "issue" per se but I wanted to buy this to install firmware on an ssd without having to stick it in my pc, but this won't work as it will be recognized as a usb device, not the ssd itself from a windows perspective.

This Orico or the Ugreen "deal". Ugreen has better review -4.5 vs Orico @ 4.1, but we all know those can't always be trusted. I have an unused 4TB 990 EVO Plus with nowhere in PC to for it.

I actually just set up that same Ugreen version last night and has been working well so far.

I would probably take the aluminum one. Better heat dissipation but the bigger deal is the LED in a clear enclosure. It's supposedly pretty bright and flashes nonstop during use. I own another 2.5" ORICO clear enclosure and same issue...I had to get dimming tape and cover the super bright LED inside the enclosure.

Second worst design out of the orico lot, the design is looks over function, the metal part is smaller than you'd think so its not a real heatsink and it doesn't pop off from the front so its not a door either, the two halves slide together smearing the heatpad, so they give you a mini pad to lower the friction.
Get the one with the whole screw down lid as a heatsink as rational design.
The only worse one is the where they encapsulated the heatspreader in a plastic box so it never sees outside air.

That's not windows, that's usb. If you want to flash firmware on the drive not the enclosure, you have to get a pci-e adapter or a pc with an m.2 slot, drives must be directly connected to a pc to get updated. Its a good reason to keep an old win10 machine around just to flash things that otherwise live in usb.
And again the problem with this design, to get access to it again you have to smear the heatpads.

Any thoughts of how to do this with laptops? I'm in a different state than where my 2x desktops are living... Would be nice to update firmware.

I have one of these and use it as an external drive. Well, now not anymore. It's very buggy and fails to "eject" whenever you try removing it so there's always a concern data loss might happen. If the drive is "asleep" and the activity indicator light is off and you press eject it turns on and Windows gives you the popup saying it's not safe. You have to wait for it to fall asleep again manually and just yank it out. Eventually my WD Blue (or Black, I've forgotten) SSD was corrupted. Now I only swear by Sabrent since my previous 2.5" enclosure worked perfectly without issues. To me, it's not worth it to save $10 if it comes with a risk...
