Do your knuckles a favor and buy a set of cut-proof gloves if you buy this. Save yourself the inevitable self-harm from using a mandoline.

So true. I took off part of my thumb the first time I used one of these

Hand still healing from slicing my finger tip off last week...these things are vicious...if you are an ounce of clumsy, take a hard turn right or left and do not get. Never get in a hurry with these things, they save enough time without rushing the process. Having said all that, I read a few blogs about mandolins and apparently every kitchen has their own names, stories, and shared trauma around these things. I think my favorite nickname was calling it the 'bitey'. I can confirm, it is in fact, very bitey.
