This or the HP at BB for $400? Asus has backlit keyboard, otherwise specs are identical. Not sure how Asus VS HP stacks up these days in regards to build quality.

Honestly, wouldn't be looking at HP with their creaky plastic lol. But I had bad experience prior, might be biased haha

I bought the Asus - I am retiring soon. It is light, good screen/size, memory and SSD is enough for me (email, like office, web surfing, etc) - I like the battery length and backlit keyboard too.

I'd pick the ASUS as their quality control has been excellent up to now. Also I believe with the ASUS you get one year of complimentary accidental damage protection when you register the warranty with ASUS. I don't recall HP offering accidental damage protection with theirs.

Agreed. Son's HP lasted 6 mo.s with screen pixels going bad/black. Not sure if warranty claim is worth it if they'll claim damage. He is super careful too. Just bought him a non touch Vivobook ($50 more at Staples) build quality is much better

ok, I gotta ask, because I am dumb like that, what is the big deal with a backlit keyboard? I haven't looked at the keys since I was 15 many decades ago when I learned how to type on a typewriter a IBM Selectric II. So old that it didn't even have a go-back correction tape on it. Why the obsession for lit up keyboards? you cannot see them under your hands. Then again, I also do not understand the RGB lights in them or the mouse that has lights strobing around it like its at a rave

Low light situations is the biggest benefit - It is useful when flying. I typically don't turn the overhead light on when sitting next to people, backlit allows easier way to see keys then.
