It's a low end CPU, but it offers a huge amount of value for the price. I used this to retire an 8th gen i5 and have been very happy with it.

I am going to guess this would blow out of the water a 2012 AMD Fx-6300 Black Edition 🤔🤔🤣

Yes very much so. Your 6300 and all other Vishera chips were some of the worst ever made. I had that and "upgraded" to the FX-8350; absolute garbage. Works better as a space heater.

FYI - was considering this a cheap AM4 upgrade for my son who still has a AMD 3600 - basically not an improvement but more of a tie.
  • 5500: Newer "Zen 3" architecture; 1/2 L3 cache (16MB) and only PCIe 3.0 functionality (chip dependent, regardless of motherboard)
  • 3600: Older "Zen 2" architecture; 32MB of L3 cache and PCIe 4.0 functionality (will require B550/X570-chipset motherboards)

I was wondering why my son's bedroom was always so warm. In my defense I bought this back in 2013 and since then have updated twice for my own but I had no issue giving it to my 8 year old son at the time to play Minecraft for which it has been doing alright until he started discovering mods and now it does get pretty warm and freezes from time to time lol.

Any budget friendly motherboard/ram recommendations? He is just doing Minecraft modding, Roblox and some five nights at Freddy's games so nothing crazy. He has my old 1060 graphics card which handles those games well.

This would be okay with some of the B450 boards that have been bundled with RAM/SSD lately since they're already limited to PCIe 3.0. It's about the same price used 3600s are going for. Still really only makes sense if you already have some parts that would go with it, building new there's usually better performance for the same price from some of the mini PCs that have gone on sale lately.

NewEgg swinging for the fences, revealing all this dead stock stuck in inventory they're still trying to get rid of. R5 5500s being sold as new in 2026 wasn't on my bingo card 😂

Stick with the 3600 till prices come back down from outer space and then upgrade to something AM5 or AM6 or whatever they're on once AI stops gobbling up all the chips in the world.

When the price of RAM now costs as much as CPU, they don't have a choice but to bring the CPU prices down.

Tempting as an upgrade from my son's 1600.
