Is MDF Board Safe to Have in Home?
MDF board can pose health risks due to the formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde resins used in its production. These materials can off-gas into the air, leading to potential health issues such as respiratory irritation, eye irritation, and increased cancer risk. However, MDF boards that comply with CARB Phase 2 standards are generally considered safe for most indoor applications. It is recommended to use these boards in well-ventilated areas, seal all exposed edges, and avoid cutting or sanding them to minimize off-gassing. For those with respiratory sensitivities, it may be advisable to avoid MDF altogether and consider alternative materials.
