Depends on which is cheaper. I've tried both. I think they're roughly comparable. The REI is lighter, but also has a lower waterproof rating. Both are packable, and both surpass the requirements for most ultra-marathon kits for waterproof rating so...that's about all I know or care about.

Do you see the Torrentshell for ~$100?

1) People assume that a rain jacket is going to be impermeable (and they rarely are) and 2) REI will take it back if it doesn't work. I think some people buy active rain layers, like this one, and presume it's going to be some sort of Gore-tex fortress. It probably works well for what it's intended for...namely as a technical layer for backpacking or trailrunning. It has pit zips, it's packable, and it's under $100. Seems good if it's something you're looking for.

Ordered one. It sounds like g-tex. I wouldn't know the difference looking at pics and description. I used to have TNF real g-tex until it fell apart after many years of light seasonal use. It was really waterproof. Now real g-tex costs a lot more, maybe 2-4 times the price of this? At least some ok colors. Hope it fits.

This is a fantastic price. I was between this jacket and the Patagonia Torrentshell. I liked the sizing more on this REI jacket, specifically the tall sizes. It's also much less swish-y than the Patagonia. Reviews from outdoorsy influencers had the REI jacket above the Torrentshell for breathability and performance, but were mixed on longevity. In general, all water resistant coatings on fabrics will degrade over time and lose their water resistance.

When both were $180, I went with the Patagonia coat for 2 reasons: lifetime warranty and branding (aka. personal preference). I don't think you can go wrong with either, and at $80 less than the Patagonia this is a steal.
