They have dramatically changed in the last 10 years or so, the old ones are at Lodge quality or a bit below (they were still much better than the no-name CHN stuff). The new ones I'd say are much higher quality now (smoother, fewer casting voids). Not a premium brand but a bit better than Lodge.

When you say "the old ones" are you referring to the old Victoria cast iron, or the old Lodge?

I would say they compete very well in the same space. Victoria is slightly thinner with a better handle. So they're more comfortable to use. They're similar to Lodge's Chef series, which may have been created as a response to Victoria. As noted from the other poster, the surface grind is much smoother as well.

I got a Victoria cast iron pan from a previous slick deal on Macy's. Have had it for 3 or so years now. It's a quality product.

This is a good price for a quality cast iron if you need something this small. Just for example, this is only big enough to make things like:
A single cheeseburger
A single grilled cheese sandwich
A small jiffy sized box of cornbread
Half pack (8) of breakfast sausauge links

smaller skillets are great also for various desserts like tarte tatin.

Also the right size for making corn tortillas one at a time: the process I like to use involves two skillets, one nonstick skillet at a medium temperature and a cast-iron skillet at a higher temperature. The tortilla comes out of the press and onto the nonstick skillet just to get it slightly cooked on the outside so that it won't stick to the high temperature skillet, then I pop it out onto the high temperature skillet to puff it up and give it the char marks.

Victoria iis higher quality than lodge. I have many cast iron pans and use them daily. If the Victoria price is the same or cheaper, go with Victoria. If you can get lodge cheaper (you usually can't) then get the lodge.

They were referring to both at the same points in time. Victoria 10 years ago was not quite as good as lodge 10 years ago. Current Victoria is slightly better than current lodge.

True but I am more trying to give folks an idea of how small this really is. It is not useful as a "main" skillet, you need a 10" or 12" for that duty.

Victoria.

I don't think the quality of Lodge has changed significantly.
