I found that you have to degrease multiple layers of carbon buildup if you have went too long between cleanings (yep that's on me). You can tell when the degreaser is finished as it will switch from being a bit foamy to clear. It will also start to evaporate and leave black puddles of concentrated liquid grease that was dissolved from solid form. Wipe up with a paper towel and reapply. Keep going until you get to a level of clean you are happy with. Be sure to wear nitrile or other protective gloves as this stuff is highly caustic!
