The Masterbuilt Gravity 800 is a charcoal smoker that stands out for long, steady cooks and strong value at this clearance price. It handles briskets and other long smokes well, can run for hours on one hopper, and the griddle gets praise too. The main cautions are durability and upkeep, with reports of controller failures, rust, firebrick wear, and grease fires if it is not kept clean. It also takes some care to light and maintain, so it feels like a solid bargain if you are comfortable with that tradeoff.
Common Questions (4)
Yes, availability is highly store-dependent and many locations are out of stock or only have floor demos. Some stores showed $274, others $225, and buyers often had to scan or order through the store or Pro Desk.
The interior can rust out fast, even when covered, and some reports put usable life around 2-3 years. The firebrick/inner metal is also described as wearing away by design, so long-term durability is the main tradeoff at this price.
The controller can fail and need replacement, and replacement units may not include Bluetooth. Startup can also be finicky, taking 15-20 minutes unless the ash is cleared first; using a torch or other strong starter can help.
Yes, grease fires can happen if the grill is not kept clean, especially during higher-volume cooks like burgers. Using large aluminum pans under the grates to catch grease reduces mess and has prevented grease fires.

I would question the wisdom of driving to a location hours away in this weather.
After about 2 years, I eventually gave it away for free and went back to a gas grill. For one, mainly because getting it to light wasnt reliable, even using multiples of the masterbuilt firestarter blocks. It could be a 15-20 min process to get it lit. Eventually I got a propane blowtorch and that made starting it easier. Second, you dont get a good charcoal flavor from this. You get a charcoal smell. but not a lot of the flavor. As I learned after the fact, a lot of those charcoal flavors are from the fat and meat juices dripping off the meat onto the coals. When the firebox is offset, the juices dont hit the coals to create that effect.
But hey, if anyone is in Richmond, Virginia, get your ass in gear:
