*Disclaimer* I only know this because the screen on my endoscope got cracked while I was working on my car. It was only then that I realized that the camera that was on it was plugged in via a USB A port on the unit. I had some old type C to type A adapters from one of my early Pixel phones (because I'm a hoarder) and tried this out and it worked. I actually prefer to have a dedicated display for my endoscope but these small screens are common and fragile.
Just a random and interesting fact. I might still be ordering this into to replace my old one. Thanks, OP

Again, I'm not championing any form factor over another here. I was simply sharing a fun fact I happened to figure out after my other endoscope broke. I personally prefer the screen attached to the unit. Others might prefer to have a larger, brighter screen to view things.
If you prefer to pay for an app in the hopes that you aren't being made into a product, I suppose that is fine too lol. Honestly, that's a fair point... but it is one that could be made with just about any smart product or online service today, free or paid. Shoot, if you have an Amazon account to buy this product, the point is a bit moot considering how many services they work with to exchange information about you. At least you can control Android app access as well as disable/uninstall the app if you aren't using it. If they have app requirements in place for data they don't need, I simply deny access during setup and uninstall the app in favor of one that doesn't try to abuse its privileges.

I got one once to check the soffit of my roof for a rat snake that had made its home there. I was not interested in sticking my face up close to the hole where it had gotten in. Found him. Still gives me the heebie jeebies.

"To each their own" doesn't apply here unless you feel like you are breaking new ground with a different point that we actually didn't agree on because, as stated, I like having the dedicated screen for ease of use too.
If you have a phone/device capable of having an external camera plug into it, that device already has multiple cameras with far more access to interesting content than your vehicles engine or my dryer vent.... and it has Internet access, GPS, and built in spy tools like the nefarious far-field microphones... 🤣
Lol, I get what you are trying to say but, for the third time, I just shared a fact that I found interesting. No part of this sharing promoted or endorsed the use of any specific software that any individual should use and certainly not if it goes against their own good judgement to use or not use. Using an app for the purpose of an endoscope, free or paid, has no guarantee to be any more or less invasive than any other app you have on any number of smart devices you own.
TLDR; I like having a screen on my endoscope too. I don't like sketchy apps either. Not really sure what needs to be debated here.
