I wonder if they are clearing these out because they've been burning up in certain motherboards? Has the problem been fixed in the 9850x3d?

Sixth gen was Skylake which used DDR4. 5th gen was laptop only. You need to go back to 4th gen to get DDR3.

Wrong.
Check intel's pages for skylake processors. Ram supported is DDR3 and DDR4. Depending on the motherboard chipset. It was a transition period between 3 and 4, much like 12th gen was transition perion between ddr4/5 and can support both.
Wiki -
Skylake's launch and sales lifespan occur at the same time as the ongoing SDRAM market transition, with DDR3 SDRAM memory gradually being replaced by DDR4 SDRAM. Rather than working exclusively with DDR4, the Skylake microarchitecture remains backward compatible by interoperating with both types of memory. Accompanying the microarchitecture's support for both memory standards, a new SO-DIMM type capable of carrying either DDR3 or DDR4 memory chips, called UniDIMM, was also announced.

Okay I looked it up myself and it turns out Skylake supported DDR3L which is a low voltage version that runs at 1.35V instead of the regular 1.5V. Regular DDR3 sticks are NOT compatible and if you tried them you would fry the Skylake IMC. Also motherboards that supported DDR3L weren't common, and neither were DDR3L dimms in the desktop form factor. The vast majority of DDR3L were sodimm sticks for laptops. So for all PRACTICAL purposes, Skylake desktop CPUs are meant to run with DDR4.
