Lots of reviews indicate switches fail after a short period.

Could be a stupid question- can this be used for portrait photography?

It's a light so yes. But skin tone might come off a bit tinted since the light source is not tuned for that. It's also close to a point source so expect hard shadows.

It's certainly bright enough, but it probably has poor CRI. Colors are going to look dull/drab.

Yes, many poor reviews about failing switches. I was going to buy, but reviews are not good. If I was certain that I could replace thew switches on my own I would still get one, but it is not apparent that this is the case. Tempted, but going to pass.

Agree with others lots of bad reviews revealing bad switches; I'm still waiting for a sale on the HD Husky Work Light that is well reviewed and easy to store:

If switches have a high failure rate, can you just add a outlet switch to it? Or does it need to be turned on everytime?

This right here. "Any light" really doesn't work for portraits, and there's a reason why studio lights for photography are so ridiculously expensive.

I don't think so. Apparently, these switches have some sort of dual functionality. You half press them to change the color temperature, and fully press them to turn the light on or off.
I guess if you never wanted to change the color temperature, you could implement an on-off switch solution. You'd lose the ability to turn them on and off individually though. I don't think it's worth the hassle. Just spend a little more on a better designed product. At least that's the way I look at it.

Portrait photography doesn't use direct lighting like this, it softens it either in a light box or with something diffusing the light. If you're looking to save money you could always put a trash bag over a bright LED light as long as it's not hot enough to melt the bag..
