Can a regular Tmo sim work in it without an unlock or it must be metro?

Must be Metro until after it unlocks, then TMO is fine.

No it will not. They locked it down.

I'm surprised these phones can run the latest Android. My old Motorola Moto X4 from 2018 had these specs (4/64).

Not sure if the unlock policy is broke or my phone is goofy. But if I'm understanding correctly I pay for 1 month of service, then let the service expire but after 365 days from initial 1 month activation I can now move the phone to any carrier (tello fo example)

I want to buy this for my son who is already on my plan. If I buy this for $40 with a new number, can I then swap his metro sim in and use it with his original number?

Yes, that's exactly how it works at Metro. I personally wouldn't call their unlock policy "broke" because a year is a long time to wait. By the time you're ready to move to Tello, there will probably be better phones at this same price point that catch your interest.

Yes but from my experience it's kinda of a pain you usually have to move the number from the new phone to an old phone first and then move your phone number you want onto it

This phone should be the free phone people give away at the mobile booths on the side of the road

Do these really need to be unlocked to be used as strictly wifi devices for a toddler?

No they don't need to be unlocked. I have purchased several for my grandchildren who use them like tablets with wifi.

This is a POS at any price. 4GB RAM is laughable in a phone. And you're supposed to wait until next year? Just set two twenty dollar bills on fire and feel the heat you get, that is worth more than this phone.

Nope. They will work just fine on wifi down to even wifi calling and sms using google voice or one of the other "get a free phone number" apps from google play.
